I listened to the Vango demonstrator at ExCel doing his patter over their PA system making claims about the virtues of their airbeam tents. He said that Vango had been developing their airbeam system for X number of years and how they were the only manufacturer of inflatable tents. I missed how many years they had been developing the system as i was a little surprised to hear his claims about their latest innovation and Vango being the only manufacturer.
He was not best pleased when I piped up and said that was a tall claim and that they weren't, he switched of the mic and said they were. To which I said what about the Dutch company, Karsten, they have been selling them for more than 25 years.
He was now a bit flustered and had a really p**d off look about him. He then claimed that he had said that Vango were the only UK company - which he categorically hadn't.
The microphone went on again and he carried on but he was clearly rattled as within ten seconds he said once again that Vango were the only manufacturer and then immediately had to correct himself to say the only UK manufacturer.
I suspect I won't be on his Christmas card list ;o)
If I had had nothing better to do I would have stayed there and continued to heckle everytime he went off piste with facts and claims - its the little pleasures in life that bring us so much enjoyment ;o)

I was looking at them tents yesterday and was told that vango are the only company to do them...maybe the same chap that I spoke to.
Thought they looked ok though, I would be a bit nervous about the tent staying up just with air, but they certainly looked solid enough and were very, very easy and quick to pump up (my 6 year old pumped one tube up by herself).I must admit I was pretty tempted to buy...but didn't in the end.

And of course the Karsten tents are based on the inlflatable Igloo tent that was manufactured by The Pneumatic Tent Company, a British company, during the 1960's.

We had one of those!

I looked at those, ... but would be afraid I would accidentally puncture a hole in it and then would not be able to blow it up when needed.
As I have gone through a few airbeds/airmattress by puncturing a hole in them on accident. So probably would be just as easy on a tent.

Why did you take a tent? Surely you could have used some of those 70's flares instead :)

The Igloo tents had rubber tubes that you could remove and repair with normal cycle tyre patches. They also used conventional Schrader valves.

I remember my dad getting up in the night to put more air in!
I would also be afraid of that as well. I know in colder temperatures you lose air pressure in things. Like during winter you have to keep a consent eye on your Tire pressure for your car, With the colder temperatures during winter you loose air pressure in your tires. So im sure it would also be the same for the tent. If camping in colder temperatures you may wake up to a deflated tent.
I can remember a young couple rolling up next to where we were pitched, they got all the gear out of the motor and he then went off in the car leaving his girlfriend standing amongst all the gear........
A little while later he comes back with his car (I think it was a Fiesta) completely full of tent, and, with a bit of difficulty extracts a fully inflated Igloo tent! He had gone back to a garage that was within a couple of miles of the site to inflate it.......
