hi

this is my first post. im just about to purchase an outwell magic 5 tent with carpet. total cost of around £400.

i also need a footprint ground sheet for extra protection at a cost of £50.

but i can get it made to measure from a tarpaulin supplier for £28 delivered!

could anyone recommend a better idea or is it best to buy the footprint designed for the tent at an ridiculous price? (£28 is for heavy duty tarp)

thank you

If you can get a made to measure tarpaulin for £28.00 I would go for that. As the Outsell Magic has a sewn in ground sheet a footprint will make life easier. The benefit of a footprint is that it protects the bottom of the tent as you will place the tent onto of the tarpaulin/groundsheet; it acts as a guide when setting the tent up and gives a clean surface when packing the tent down.

Just make sure that the tarpaulin dimensions are slighter shorter that the tent. If not rain could fall and collect onto to the tarpaulin and you may get pools of water under the tent. If they can insert eyelets for the pegging points this would also be helpful but not essential as you can make your own.

As matter of interest and if do you don’t mind me asking where have you got the quote from...?

A footprint is essentially a made to measure tarpaulin sheet anyway so go for the cheaper option. It's only to stop mud getting onto the groundsheet then transferring to the flysheet when you roll the tent up.

You are right too about the cost of footprints. They are hugely expensive considering what they are. The mark up on them must be astronomical. I'd be surprised if they cost more than a few quid to make.

It will work but will need a bit of trimming or folding.
On checking the eBay website they seem to do an even cheaper one for £12.95 (economy tarpaulin 3.5m x 5.4m) as it is only used to keep the underside of the tent clean then this may even work...

A lot of the camping outlets sell ready made plastic groundsheets with eyelets too, much cheaper than the footprints.  Its what I've used for years and they are great.  If you need to make eyelets, Hobbycraft or similar sell little kits for about a fiver and you get enough eyelets in the kit to last years, or if bored you can go round eyeletting everything that stands still long enough!
