Hi.  We have brought our first tent today.  And have our first nights camping booked away for a months time.  We have a 6 and 7 year old.  Any advice/tips on what to take etc for basics.  Many thanks.

Just take what you think, you will never be far away from a town, so anything you think you need, but have not got with you, you will be able to pick up.

Just enjoy the experiance, as there is nothing quite like a camping holiday, to get away from it all.

I am no expert but having 13, 8 and 5 year olds I would suggest, apart from absolute basics such as tent and sleeping bag!!!!
Picnic blanket
Electric heater with ehu
Good torch
Calpol
Nintendo ds or DVD player - low volume! Again if u have
Dvds
Dominoes or chess or scrabble etc whatever you play
Pillows
Warm socks
Football or frisbee
I will ask them in the morning what they like the best.

Have fun!

Hi Peachy & welcome to the forum

You don't have to buy everything straight away, you can take duvets, pillows, crockery, cutlery, pans etc. from home for your first trip, until you find out what suits your family before you spend a fortune on equipment. Make sure you take a bucket with a lid to save the middle of the night dash to the toilet block

Yep the bucket with lid is essential and plenty of things to keep them amused

Poundshop or household dept, What tent have you bought? cheap fleeces never go wrong, under airbeds or wrapped round you in the evening...most of all a sense of hunour and patience, and don't forget the obligatory arguement when pitching the tent...it just has to be done!

Yes everyone argues when pitching a tent!!
Have a great time camping Peachy77 I am sure you and the children will love it. We started camping when our children had grown up and my one regret is that we didn't do it when they were young. Children have an amazing time camping

Try pitching your tent before you go if you can....even if it's in the local park!

A meal for your first night that you just have to warm up and something for breakfast the next morning.....nothing worse than having to go shopping for food when you're tired and/or hungry!

Find out as much as you can about the area you'll be visiting.....local chemist/takeaway is a good idea when you have young children!

Take a look at this site for things for your children to look out for http://www.naturedetectives.org.uk/ ...it was recommended on here when we first started camping and has been a blessing with children and grandchildren!
