After getting the 2011 600 for my birthday and waiting for the weather to dry out a little, we had a practice pitch in the garden. Got it up in about 30 ins but it was a bit of a hit and miss effort. We weren't sure what we should peg down, didn't get the 'walking the tent forward' thing and weren't sure what we should do about the ring and pin bits because the poles seemed really really tight to bend into them, thought they were going to crack! Used to a steel poled tent which is obvously much more sturdy and you don't have the option of bending the poles etc so any help and advice would be very very appreciated!

Pitched my 500 on my own for the 1st time 2 weeks ago...I pegged out the two back corner tension straps...Put the 3 sets of poles through their sleeves while the tent is flat on the ground...One end of the back pole(over the sleeping pod)into the ring and pin...Nip round the other side and insert the other end of the pole in the ring..Then peg out the back guys out to hold it upright...

Middle pole... Same thing having walked the pole forward 1st..

Front end pole.. Same again...having again walked the pole forwards...Peg out the two front guys to hold the front erect...Then peg out the two front tension straps..
Down each side pegging as you go..Attach the clips that hold the tent to the poles at the side...Then do the side guys... A wee bit of tweaking and re guying till you get it the way you want it...and you should be done..

This worked for me...Though I pitched in a fairly light breeze...Would maybe have to rethink pitching strategy in adverse weather...Hope this helps in your pitching of your 600...If you found the poles a bit tight to bend into the ring and pin system have a look at your tension straps(inside the tent) and make sure they are not too tight....

Agree with Jelboy53, that's how I pitch my 600 single handed. Also I make sure the bedroom pods are not attached and the tension straps are off when packing and the front door is open. If I leave the bedroom on it's way to tight to get up easily and I'm crawling about inside to undo it!!! (or I send the kids in!)

Have you tried the Gary Cross Method?  If you follow it to the letter you can solo pitch a tent the size of the 600 in about 15-20 mins.

I tried it to get my Icarus 500 up quickly to dry it out after last weekend's camping and couldn't believe how easy it was.  I just wish I had worked it out before going away last weekend - luckily the campsite was quiet and no-one, other than my 4 year old son, saw how much I struggled to put it up on my own.

Search YouTube (sorry, can't get a link just now since at work) for "Outwell Nevada M Pitching Video" and it's the one by 'thetentfactory'.

Basically:

1. Peg out the 4 corners, losen the straps right off, open the front door fully

2. Lay out the 3 assembled poles

3. thread the Front pole only, and bend it upright into position.  It should stand up on its own because the corners are pegged.

4.  Repeat for the middle pole, and finally the rear.

5. Peg out guy lines etc, clip tent to poles

It really is so much easier than struggling to hold the 3 poles up whilst pegging out the rear guylines and having to walk the tent out when you're on your own.  Just be carefull not to put too much strain on the front pole when bending it on to the ring and pin at the same time as standing it up.

I suspect this is the video you were referring to...?

Interesting really as it does look a lot more simple than the conventional way.

I'm not convinced this would work with our Trout Lake 4 although i'm tempted to give it a shot..!

Well.. That probably means it will work with ours then as it's not a dissimilar
pitching arrangement..

I see myself pitching it again on my own so i'll seriously give it a go... !

I am sure it will work for you. We found it worked fine. We first pitched our Oakland XL the Gary cross way and found it so easy. We now pitch all tents this way.

I'm just wondering though Tony, our Trout Lake 4 is a ZIG so I don't see how getting the pegs in the correct place will be as obvious as if it's a SIG. That's the bit that throws me a little.. Same as your Bear Lake in that respect..

I'd like to see the man do the same with a ZIG to be honest.. Definitely interested in the whole concept though as he seems to trump the official line..

Maybe we can get the man on here to give some views??

Hi all

The polycottons upto the Bear Lake 6 size can be pitched the same way as my video above, you just need to zip the groundsheet in on the first pitch and then leave it in. You would want a footprint so you dont get the SIG dirty etc. Ok the tent is heavy and its a little bit harder to get it in its bag this way but it is still the better of the two evils.

Gary Cross
