Is it just me or have Outwell gone mad ?

We have recently managed to get hold of a Trout Lake 5 front canopy to use on our Wolf Lake 5 and although it fits great I have had to make a small alteration so that it fits perfectly.

When we first offered the canopy up to the Wolf it fitted as it did on the Trout but because the Wolf, unlike the Trout, has the two side brace bars the canopy had to run over the top of these bars and did not fit snug to the tent all the way around which I could see would be a problem if the wind managed to get under this section.

So, I whipped the canopy down, having marked the point at which the canopy crosses the brace bars, punched 2 small holes through with a fabric hole punch, glued 2 rubberised patches to the underside of the canopy and fitted 2 brass eyelets in the holes. In all it must have taken me no more than 20 minutes plus an hour or so to let the fabric glue bond.

Back up with the canopy and now when in place slide back the brace bars, let the canopy fit neatly all the way around the front pole, and then slid the brace bars back into place but this time through the canopy section and the new eyelets first and then into the front pole section of the Wolf. Stand back chuffed to bits as I am guessing that this is how the same style of canopy fits on the Bear Lake.

However, the next day I end up at Go Outdoors and there is a Bear Lake fitted with a Bear Lake canopy and its the same as the Trout Lake one was before I fitted the eyelets, running over the top of the brace bars ?

Why why why did Outwell just not fit 2 brass eyelets ? It makes a massive difference and looks so much better, I dont get it are these canopies all the same ?

Would be interesting to hear from any BL owners as I am guessing that the canopy must slip and get baggy because it cannot secure itself behind the pole at these 2 points and so it must slip over a day or two I would guess, or am I wrong ?

I'm also thinking of altering our Montana lake canopy as there is just an elasticated section that goes on the front of the tent.  This did make it baggy and it slipped off when the wind picked up.  It didn't strike me as a great design but I'm new to camping and wasn't sure if I'd put it up right.

Don't suppose anyone has any pictures of their alterations?  I'm finding it difficult to follow the first post - mainly because I'm not sure what a bracing bar is!  (this is probably very stupid of me!)

The other outwell extensions for the river and reef tents have a securing strap.  Inside the fly at the last seam there is a tube (like what the poles run through on the outside) attached to the seam.  Through this runs a webbing strap.  This hooks to the ring and pins at the bottom of the main tent poles and then tightens.  This holds the canopy in place.  You can see it on here (example Yukon river 4):

I am having the seam unpicked and a tube made out of the pole bag sewn in, then having the webbing put through (this webbing only cost £8 and the ladderlocks £1.80 and then a copule of rings to peg the bottom at £1.20).

PS: The bracing bar is the horizontal bar that goes above the windows on the wolf, arrow, norfolk and bear lake tents.  The montana lake doesn't have them, so you don't need to worry about putting holes in the canopy!  You'll see it if you look at pics on tent reviews.
