just back from our first ever family camp. the cheapo Tesco tent was a reasonable size for myself hubby our 13yo dd and our airbeds. to cut a long story short the tesco tent has lots of obvious flaws so I've told hubby that bell tents would cover all those problems with bathtub groundsheet mossie net doors very easy to erect.

of course they're a lot dearer than the £50 tesco tent so I thought I'd ask what the drawbacks are to owning a bell tent. tesco tent was 5m x 3 so I'm thinking a 5m bell would give us a slightly bigger and better area.
thanks in advance for your help:-)

ps it's a 5m with zig I want, got a nice little bonus from work that's burning a hole in my pocket. :-)

I've recently got a 5m zig and am really pleased with it. I havent been away properly yet, so there may be be some problems yet to uncover. I did sleep out with the kids this weekend. Only disadvantages I might suggest is that you have to consider the limited area of headroom
(there was a whole long thread on here about how to calculate the area). The only other slight issue I have with mine is that the zip catches on the groundsheet when you try to ge the zig on or off, which meant it took me about 5 mins to zip it off and longer to zip back on. might just be mine though.
I'm thrilled with it on every other point. Fab quality, wonderful feeling to sleep in, soooo easy to put up and take down. Can't wait to take it away properly next weekend.
One other thought...most people take utility tents to cook in when using bell tents I think. I'm intending to as cooking in it would feel unsafe to me, plus making the canvas smell I would think.

Ah good point about the cooking- I was thinking of using a windbreak we have already and cooking there, not intending doing much more than breakfast and the odd pot of pasta for tea, plus cups of coffee and tea of course.

I'm going for the 5M bell as I'd read that someone of 5ft 3 could stand by the centre pole without stopping but not move much further away from it, which didn't appeal.

Can I ask which one you went for Kate - they all look pretty similar to me, but the price seems to vary quite a bit.

I'll be a mostly fairweather camper so shouldn't need to zip and unzip every time ( unless we get weather like this all summer!)

I'm going to work out where hubby and I can stand ( more for me than him, he has been chief chair tester this trip, as every time I looked around he was "testing" a different seating option)

I've worked out that at my height I'll have a 9ft or 2.8m diameter area I can walk around in - considering our aerobeds are a metre wide each that's just fine :-)

We got a bell tent from Karma Canvas which we used for the first time this weekend. Having sloped sides can limit what furniture you can use, drying takes longer, you don't get storage pocket and bedroom pods (unless you buy an inner), people want to look inside and ask questions (not so good when you're trying to get dressed!) and you'll want to buy lots of lovely things for it! Totally love ours! Still can't believe how quick it was to put up, and how totally different the feel and temperature was from any other tent we've used. Even the kids slept in both days we were away which is so not like them! Also must mention that Karma Canvas customer service was absolutely superb - might be worth contacting them to see when they will get more in stock.

well I'll have a chance to test my rudimentary working out sometime soon... I've ordered the 5m zig from boutique camping. they were the only ones in the sub £500 bracket that had stock. I'm hoping it's just as good as the soulpad/belltent/ karma version: +)

how excited am I?

oooo ailurotoo I'm really excited for you!

we're going away for a week in the middle of jun and I'm trying to persuade my other half to take the bell instead of the nevada m.... going to get him to put it up in the garden today and we can all sleep in it so he can see how nice it is. I bought it sort-of in secret (in that he knew I wanted one and had once said in passing that it would be fine but I didn't mention I'd actually bought it and then I had it delivered while he was away!). But he does seem quite excited about it now too.

I'm just under 5ft1 and can put ours up easily and it seems to have tonnes of space where I can walk around (but then I am a shorty!). I think even if you are tall, because it is so tall at the middle and feels so airy, you'd be totally fine. Like kate08 I also found the zip around the groundsheet a little tricky to undo - it seemed to catch a little on the groundsheet fabric in places so took a bit of easing round. I might take a knife and just trim back the bits that catch. I think in fine weather it will be amazing but I don't want to cook inside so we'll have to stick a tarp up for when the weather is less good. I'm also slightly nervous about how to dry out the canvas if we have to take it down wet as it is incredibly heavy and difficult to manoevre / spread out (I had to manhandle it into the buggy to wheel it out to the lawn as I couldn't carry it)

Let us know how you get on in your new one when it arrives!

PS given the prices they go for on fleabay, even if you didn't get on with it (which I'm sure you will!), you could probably sell for not too much less that what you paid for it.

I got the sandstone colour one... hubby did say it was my bonus and my choice but I felt it made the tent look a bit "girly" and it cost a bit more so I reckoned that could be spent elsewhere. I also think it will be easier to get a tarp etc. to match the sandstone colour. It has no mossie net but I can use a tip from these boards and drape net curtains over the a frame.

I did think I'd not lose much money on it if I hated it but I've coveted these for a while now.

not had any reply from boutique camping maybe they do it the old fashioned way and put a paper receipt in with the tent. hoping it comes tomorrow.

You'll be fine with your tent and head room, I call it the 'CONE OF HEAD ROOM'

If you do a search, you should find a link to the posts from a while back covering the topic and the formula to work it out both serious and joking

I got a few strange looks when I marked out full size plans on my local beach, of three four and five meter bell tents in side evlevation.

Canvas tent, paraffin light, petrol stove. Heaven
I'd rather be kayaking.
Spent up, not pent up, just had my new tent up.

ah I just did it to scale on the back of an envelope - I could have done the maths but a few inches doesn't really matter either way.

I've been onto the boutique camping website and my tent has shipped ( said DD could name it and it's called tenty wenty now!)

One of the main reasons I went for the zig instead of sig was so I could unzip it to move it when needed. I can just about pick the tent plus groundsheet up when dry....wouldn't stand a chance when wet! So at least I know I can unzip and lighten the load a bit.

Enjoy your tent! They really are gorgeous things.

I'm 5ft 8ish and have a 4m tent and don't find the headroom a problem. I now try to keep things round the sides of the tent and leave the middle as free as possible to make the most of the available headroom. It's the stooping to get in the door which is a nuisance. With a 5m tent there would be a lot more headroom and a higher doorway.

Hi, in answer to the OP about some negatives with a bell ....

Ventilation: We were away in our 5M soulpad bell this weekend, and I was surprised that it felt quite stuffy inside, even when the door was wide open.  Yes I know I could unzip the floor but then I'd be exposed to creepy crawlies coming in as well as loss of privacy!  I wonder why bells don't have windows like other tents?

No mesh door:  We also got eaten alive with midgies, yikes.  Even though I had put up double netting hitched on to the A-frame door, the midges were able to fly in at both sides of the a-frame (there is a considerable gap between frame and canvas).  At the time of buying the bell, I hadn't realised that some brands had mesh doors on the bells, if I'd known this I would have been swayed to buy one of these!

Furniture:  As others have said, furniture has to be different in a bell due to slopey sides, and a bell can easily look cluttered.  To get over this issue, I bought a utility tent for cooking of my pre-existing camp gear and storage .... worth noting though that in addition to the cost of utility tent, I also was going to be charged for pitching it (so I didn't, i just cooked outside).

I have an Outwell Wolf Lake 5 also.  I decided this weekend that instead of selling it like I had planned (when I bought the bell in Jan) that I'd hold on to it and am likely to use Wolfie for longish camping which will be mainly in summer (because of great storage needed when we are away for long periods of time, windows for ventilation and to maximise views, etc).  And I'll probably use the Bell for off-season camping and with our wood burning stove, and mainly for weekends or a few days.  I also feel that if we use the bell-utility tent combination at off-season we'll be less likely be charged for a utility tent.

Weight - like another poster said, I had to use the baby buggy to move the tent, just unable to manage it on my own (5'3" female, not very strong).

Lots of positives with the bell too ... its just lovely to be in, feels so atmospheric, easy, attractive, etc.  I don't think you'll regret buying one!  Enjoy it!

Humbird

Yes, I agree. The colour of the canvas means that it's light in the tent but it would be good to be able to see out. I've thought about putting a window in the door, and might actually try that one day if I'm brave enough.
