What about a 5m bell tent with no inners? That way there is no restriction when sleeping and the airbeds/SIMs could even be stacked up during the day to create even more space if needed.

You should find that the 210cm bedroom will be fine. Have you seen any of the tents up and had a look around..?

The Gelert Horizon 6 is identical to the Hi Gear Zenobia 6 from Go Outdoors. Both retail for similar prices, the Gelert maybe a bit dearer, but at least if you wanted to see one 'in the flesh' the Zenobia should be displayed at Go Outdoors - who also often have discount offers every few weeks.

Don't know if this is any use to you but I have a brand new one of these for sale - the Gelert Vector 6, identical in size to the Horizon 6 but without the storage pockets. It's never been out of the bag since I bought it in July last year - if you're interested let me know. The pic btw has been copied from Gelert's website.

Some conclusions after visiting a local camping shop (unfortunately with a rather limited choice of tents)...

A sleeping pod of 210 cm is simply too small to sleep in when you're tall: I have the head and feet pressed against the material at either end. After comparing the space in some dome tents on display (lying down at 90° to the intended direction), I came to the conclusion that I really need 230 cm minimum to lie down properly with some clearance from the sloping sides, so my height plus 35 cm. On this basis, a 210 cm sleeping pod then will only fit someone who is less than 175cm tall.

175 cm just happens to be the average height of a man over 16 in the UK according to statistics that I found on the BBC website. What this means is that most tent manufacturers are making tents with 210 cm pods that will only fit men of no more than average height. Why tent manufacturers make family tents that fit only 50% of the male population is quite simply a mystery : I would have assumed they would aim their products at 80% or 90% of the population.

Anyway, the only solution for me is to find a family tent which includes a sleeping pod that is maybe 210 cm long but which is at least 230 cm wide (with the partition removed), so that I can sleep across the longer dimension. An Icarus 800 or Tigris 800XL might work but are over my budget. Instead I might try and find either the Outwell Texas L or the Vango Midas 800, which are discontinued but still on sale at reduced prices.

I've just ordered the discontinued Vango Midas 800, which is on offer at £180 at Outdoor World this weekend, and including the carpet and the footprint, it works out at less than £225.

The idea is to use the big bedroom (210 x 300 cm) without the divider for me and my wife and put the children in either one or two of the kid/woman sized bedrooms (210 x 140 cm). Vis-à-vis style bedrooms weren't my first choice, as there is less light in the living area. However, the price was within my budget for a weekend tent.

i'm pretty please with mine (vango midas 800) me and the wife have the big pod and son has one of the smaller ones leaving loads of space. good headroom in the middle does slope away some, just managed to grab a matching canopy for it too but that is untested as of yet.

If one happens to be on the continent and near a camping shop the 'Basecamp Florida XL' is a rubberised canvas airbed that is 2.25m long available as either a single or double - It would be nice if somebody in the UK started stocking this.
