I have read a few discussions on here recently about ways of cooking in bad weather. I decided to invest £60 in a Khyam Day Shelter 200 to use as a utility tent for longer trips. Our tent doesnt have any way of attaching a porch and I wanted somewhere to cook as well as room for storage. The Day Shelter was brilliant, stood up well to wind and rain and made such a difference to our holiday.

We do quite a bit of cooking when we are camping and being able to get out of the wind and rain was brilliant. The day shelter was also useful for storing the kids scooters and other stuff and gave us more room in the main tent.

I will try and post a pic in a minute!

Hmmm...got me thinking! Our Porch got totalled in the 1/2 term winds, was great for cooking (I like to cook too!), but quite expensive to replace currently - now wondering if something like this might be an option. Did you have any issues re: pitch size with your tent as well? Our tent is quite large, 7 x 4m, & we struggled to fit tent, porch, trailer & car onto our pitch (a 100m2 AWP). We like to have EHU but haven't tried on grass yet - is there more flexibility with what you can pitch?

You got one then Angedaws
We used ours properly for 8 days at half term, it was brilliant, the little bit of extra room it gives us compared to our old utility made all the difference if two of us needed to be in there, and I love the mesh walls.

Did you manage to pitch it ok on your own? I had to put ours up myself to dry when we got home and it was easier than i thought, although it was perfectly calm at the time.

We have a basic Wynnster utility tent 3mx3m (currently available from Somerset Camping for £64.99) and what a difference it makes. Space for cooking, sitting, eating, storage etc. Worth every penny. Glad you are pleased with yours ANGEDAWS. The Khyams are great, jealous :-)

We were a bit sneaky because we just put it up without saying anything. The campsite was quiet and I got the impression that they would be OK about it. We had a 6m x 6m pitch so that was just big enough for our tent, trailer and the day shelter. I think in future I will play it by ear but it would have been worth paying a few extra pounds per night to use it.

We also pitched the Khyam right next to our main tent. I suppose for fire safety it should have been a bit further away but that would have definitely been outside the pitch boundaries. It was nice to just step out of the tent and into the kitchen.

For this trip I put it up with my son but I think I could have managed on my own, its just keeping the pin in one side while you do the other thats always tricky!

The Khyams are £52 plus delivery at the moment from the Khyam website so thats what swung it for me in the end. I looked at the Outdoor Revolution outhouses but the Khyam seemed better value.

Excuse the slightly messy interior on the photo but it gives you an idea of the space you get!

HI

I had the same problem on the last week away ....

I got sick of the mess and clutter in the front of the tent so bought a cabanon utility tent from the local free ad paper ...

Cant wait to try it now on our 2 week trip to Wales

I got one of those amazing Coleman Evolva Chef Annexes when they being sold off for £15 - from a tip-off on UKCS.

Thrilled with it as a utility tent, but we never have space in the car to take it camping, and use it mostly in the garden! We need a bigger car!
