We are considering an Outwell Vermont XL for family camping. We love the layout and size of the tent. It is approximately 7 x 4.5 metres when erected. I was wondering if anybody has experienced restrictions on the sites they can stay in due to the large size of the tent. Thanks in advance.

I think you will find your tent falls inside most pitch sizes! Normally 9x5
I've got the monty 6 which s a tad wide for say caravan and coming club sites but it's only the porch at sticks out, I've not had a problem yet but if a site tried to charge me more I simply wouldn't go!!!!

Many sites, including C&CC sites, have a maximum tent width of 5 metres so you should be ok.
The only problem may be having to park your car fairly close to the tent if it is a standard 11 metre wide pitch which will leave you with only about 3 metres at each side of the tent.

There is no standard pitch size on independent sites just phone the campsite with the tent size

There are plenty of sites that take bigger tents, ours is 6.2 x 4.8 and we also sometimes have side porch and front extension to add on to that and we've not been turned away or paid extra at any of the sites we've stayed at.  Best just to check in advance if you are booking, there is a good thread on here with a long list of sites which accept larger tents.

Sites accepting large tents

I personally wouldn't pay more than the standard pitch price, I'd rather find a different site.

We always ask in advance about the size of our larger tents. It's a little smaller than yours, but we've not had a problem so far. Just mention it when booking, and extra charges haven't ever been mentioned.

We have never had problems.

Our last camp we ooked we just stated on the booking that we were bringing either a Vermont L or a Bear Lake 6 (not as big as your XL), a trailer and a car. When we arrived I asked about putting a side extension on the Bear Lake and di it cost (we did not have the extension when booking) which makes it wider than your XL. The reply was no problem, no cost an extension is really part of the tent so no cst.

The pitch allocated to us was huge. We could hae fitted both the Bear Lake 6, the Vermont L, the trailer and two cars on it and had room to spare! Granted not all the pitches on site were that big but they were all big. Another of the smaller pitches had a Bear Lake 6 on it with the front extension room at the side and room at the front to park the car.

As others have said pick the site carefully, tell them what you want to take (if you then are asked for more money they in theory can't as the booking and therefore the contract price for your tent has been pre agreed) and before you book look at the reviews to see what pitch size is like.

Cheers

We have the Vermont xl and have never had a problem. Some sites will ask you to pay more per night or for 2 pitches but not all.

We've had ours for 3 years and not a problem

Hi Everybody.
Thanks so much for taking the time to reply and for giving me a few good pointers.
I really appreciate it and it has put my mind at ease regarding the Vermont.
Thanks again,
Mehigan.

We have never been asked for the size of our tent when we have booked, most of the sites we go on are "pitch where you like" sites and I have seen absolutely huge set ups on them

http://www.spitalfarmcraftcentre.com, we have a vango killington 600 and have always struggled to find a campsite that allows it but these guys did and its a nice little place to go camping and only about 7 miles away from Scarborough beach.
