Hi...

My husband and I currently have a 10(ish) year old Outwell Hartford M. I love it deeply.

However, in the 10 years since we bought it (our first ever 'major' joint purchase!), we grew up, got married and now have two young daughters (4 and almost  2). We haven't been on a proper camping holiday for about 3 years as I just didn't fancy camping for a while (I know....please don't judge me). However, now the girls are a bit older and I've seen how much a bog standard package holiday to Spain costs, I'm warming to the idea of being proper campers again! I quite fancy camping for a couple of weeks in europe next summer and going away for a few other breaks in the year as well, at half terms and weekends.

Unfortunately, my beloved Hartford 'M' just is not quite big enough for the 4 of us. We have camped overnight as a family in it once and my husband and I slept in the main living area, whilst the children were in the bedroom. Not ideal for a proper holiday. Also, not really enough storage for all the extra stuff we'd need to store for the girls for a proper break somewhere.

I have therefore been eyeing up new tents, but I seem to have expensive tastes! I really, really want a polycotton tent. My ideal tent of choice on the current market is a Kampa Filey Classic (even though it's vomit coloured!). I would also consider a second hand Kampa Holkham 6 but these still set you back a few hundred.

However, I have been offered a friends old tent as it is now surplus to requirements. It is an Ouwell Georgia XL with a carpet and I can have it for £150. It defintely isn't my ideal tent, however it does have a number of benefits. I have a thing about the older Outwell double skinned tents. My Hartford M is double skinned and I just think it's so much better than the newer Outwell single skinned offerings. I also like the fact it has three bedrooms - our girls sleep better individually at this age, the idea of them sleeping in the same bedroom in a tent makes me recoil at the thought of how late they'll fall asleep and how early they'll wake up! Another plus point is that the Georgia has only been used 3 times and I know it will be in fabulous condition.

The main worry I have about the Georgia though, is the size of it. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for having as much space as possible, but I'm worried it may not fit on some pitches, especially pitches in Europe (I particuarly fancy Holland or Luxembourg next year). Any opinions on this particular worry would be welcome.

Basically, I want to know what others think? Is this a good buy? We aren't really in the position to afford my perfect tent at the moment. So do I part with £150 now for what seems to be a very good tent (but not what I really want), or do I save the money and hope that a decent used polycotton one (or a new one at sale prices)comes up between now and next summer? In the meantime we could use the Hartford M for the odd weekend/week halfterm until the summer.

Do you know why you friends only used it 3 times ?
Was is a pain to pitch ?

I would save your money and go down the polycotton route if that's what you really want :)

Happy camping .

You're right, that is a great price. Where is it available for £539?
