Hi de hi
Real newbie here - 3 mins old to be precise!
We are thinking of buying the 5m Ultimate Bell Tent and wondered how more experienced campers rate this model compared to other manufacturers. The canvas is a lighter grade than some I have seen online - is this an issue to worry about or have they got the weave just right to compensate for this.
Like many things I suspect the 'get what you pay for' maxim may apply with these tents, but any help or advice about this aspect or any other gratefully received.
Thanks very much.

There are several owner reviews of the 5m Ultimate in the "Tent Reviews" section of this website - all overwhelmingly positive, 10/10 is the average rating.

In terms of the more expensive brands, yes, the canvass is more heavyweight. This means the that the tent will stand up better to longer term use, but shouldn't be an issue for an occaisional camper.

Other plus points on the more expensive brands are that you tend to get better quality poles, guy lines and pegs, the zips for the ZIG are more heavyweight too.

Some of the more expensive brands (e.g. Canvass & Cast) also have an opening for a stove flu exit already built into the tent - that's a major bonus as with the others, if you decide you want a stove at some point down the line, you'll have to cut a hole in your tent (scary!).

Summary: the 5m Ultimate gets pretty rave reviews and it doesn't sound like you can go far wrong with it. If you want a stove or plan on using the tent regularly in rough conditions or having it pitched for several months at a time, you might want to think about pushing the boat out and spending a little more.

All the best (and welcome),

Barney

Thanks very much Barney.
Definitely food for thought. I had seen the cracking reviews on this site, but they all seemed to be for the Belltent.co.uk outlet, with not much about other suppliers. I'll have another good look at Canvas and Cast but they are now only taking orders for 2013, obviously a good sign in itself, but frustrating as we were looking for an adventure this summer - note to self: get more organised and plan further ahead! Bct Bell tents look very sturdy as well - and British made - but again more pricey.
Cheers again for taking the trouble to reply.
Bren

There is also soulpad and karma. If you look in 'other tents' there are a few reviews for the karma tents there. I'm very happy with mine!

Hi, another newbie here, just wanted to recommend www.bakerandbell.com - we have recently bought a bell tent from them and we are more than happy! They are really good quality .for the price (£275) and lots of "essential" other goodies too! We have used ours in the garden where we had the sides rolled up in the sun but also tested it thoroughly at a very wet and windy festival - no leaks or problems whatsoever and plenty of envious looks the next morning when others hadn't survived the night! The tent is 4m and we have found this ideal for us x 4 and all our gear and it's extremely quick and easy to put up. Good luck, best decision we made to go for a bell tent!

Thanks BTF. We have taken the plunge and opted for the Belltent.co Ultimate. As Barney said above, all those 10/10 can't be bad and we are summer campers in the main. Went for the awning thingy as well - so a bit of a spend out, and a bit more pricey but what the hell - we deserve it after a pretty tough year. Our tent should be with us in a week - bit like a little kid waiting for a birthday - all quite exciting following the shall we, shant we. Heading off to France in a few weeks, but definitely going to practice getting those nice taught (but not too tight!) seams when putting up the tent in the garden.
Happy hols to all.
Bren
