Hi,

I emailed Outwell to ask about best method for cleaning their polycotton tents and they replied that the polycotton they use is naturally waterproof and therefore is not treated with waterproofing - they stated that therefore cleaning with hot soapy water would not do it any harm.

Note: I have paraphrased the above as their email disclaimer states the content of their reply doesn't represent the official view of their company and asks for the contents not to be disclosed to anyone!?

Anyway, my question is that this advice seems to be contrary to the advice of almost everybody else I've spoken to.

Can anyone shed any light?

Many thanks.

Kampa Instructions Polycotton Tents:

Dirty tents can be washed using clean water and a soft brush. Do not scrub and never use detergents.

Sounds more like it....

Outwell manufactures great products, but they are so up their own A*S, they don't need to respond to general public... one day (we hope) this might change.
hey there goes another pink flying pig....

Last year our ML got covered in mud , grass stains & oh yea cow poo , and it was really ground in !

When we got it home , we put it up , removed the groundsheet and with just water , we jet washed the entire tent . We didn't stand too close so as not to damage the fabric , it worked a treat !!

We used the tent again not long after this & it was absolutley fine :)

I think that just water is the way to go .

I would have thought that a hose pipe with just regular water pressure would get more every day marks off .

Hope this helps :)

Hi all,

I have an outwell hawaii reef, i bought it ex display last year and it was well dirty.  Im afraid to say it! but we also pressure hosed it!! and when mentioned on here, fellow members where horrified!

No soap and water or water and elbow grease would of shifted the marks, the pressure hose did.  The tent was dried and we then fabsilled the whole tent and then packed away for this year.

The tent has been used twice since and is totally fine and fully water proofed, on its last outing my dog decided to walk all over it when we took it down and it now has  muddy footprints all over the ceiling.  we tried again brush, soap & water but wont come off.

So im afraid im going to pressure hose it again! im aware some members will say im reducing the life of the tent etc.  But it wasnt brand new got it for a bargain so the risk for us was worth it, and the tent doesnt look any worse for doing it. and we love this tent!

regards andrea
