Going to start by saying I am a completly new camper.

We have arranged to go away this weekend, just local, to get used to pitching the tent.

My question is were would the tent pegs be? openened the poles not in there, looked in the tent bag and unless they are inside the tent i cant see them, its all rolled up.

Dont want to turn up tomorrow to find i have a tent and no pegs

Should be inside the tent if its been packed as Outwell do. Have a look on Youtube and search for Outwell Montana 6. There are loads of videos showing how to pitch and depitch (to get it back into the bag), including official Outwell vidoes.

The "official" Outwell video shows the pegs wrapped inside the tent in the bag. If I were you I would check it before you go.

Ditto clunty's comment , if there is any grit in the soil the plastic pegs suffer so we now use rockpegs ... look rather like a thick 8" nail with a plastic top

These are the sort and at £20 for 50 they are not too dear...... you might also need something to bang them in

Thanks for the tips, rolled the tent out and hey presto pegs inside. I was a little wary of taking out its bag indoors and never getting it back in.

I will order more pegs, dont think hard ground should be a prob this weekend but definately for the future.

Have to agree, we're yet to use our Montana Lake properly but already we've got a separate bag for the pegs which includes the Outwell supplied steel ones, 20 x Deltas, 24 x Rock Pegs (from Halfords £4 for 8), a rubber mallet, a claw hammer, peg puller and spare guys !

Hopefully should cover us for most eventualities

This may seem silly but..

If the ground is hard, could you not pour some water (only small amounts) where you are going to place the pegs to make the earth softer?

My son who is a camping virgin came with us a while back bringing his 2 man tent. He though his metal pegs ( that came with the tent a Suncamp)  would be OK as we have had a lot of rain recently .....

Was so funny watching the poor kid bending peg after peg in the New Forest, he now understands why his dad said get rock pegs

Our first tent was a Cabanon frame tent which is one of the more expensive makes but even then they gave you thin steel pegs and a rubber mallet. Our first pitch abroad was at Pornic in Brittany. The rubber mallet was useless as the ground was so hard. We borrowed a copper mallet from the couple in a caravan next door which was great. We have changed all the pegs to rock pegs since which are far superior.

Next morning we went to a Bricomarche and bought a 2lb lump hammer which is the best tool ever for driving in pegs. We still take a claw hammer for removing pegs but the lump hammer is the best for getting them in. We have seen people having awful problems with pegs and lend them the lump hammer and hey presto, no problem at all. Forget putting water to soften the ground, if you have a lump hammer no ground is too hard.

Well it lasted one night, we awoke at 6 to find ourselve in a massive puddle. Poor guy next to us almost drowned.

The only good thing is that the tent is fully water proof as it was bone dry inside.

Only hope for better weather tomorrow so we can get it dry.

Not a great camping start but it can only get better from here.
