I have done a few camping trial-runs and have (had!) decided to buy my own gear in the end-of-season sales this year ready to camp next year. I was aiming for a Vango Icarus 500 or 600 having seen a friends. But I've found a second hand Lichfield Commanche 8 for £50.

We are a family of 4 (kids age 1 and 4, but haven't ruled out a third in the future!)

q1) Which would you get - the more expensive brand new Icarus or cheaper, used Lichfield?

q2) Would the Lichfield cause trouble being an 8 berth? I think I have read about some campsites charging more for tents over 6 berth, or only normally taking up-to-6-berth.

btw the Lichfield is a bathtub SIG, with full SIG sleeping pods. The Icarus is a fully-full SIG.

TIA!

Out of the 2 I personally would go for the Icarus mainly because I think they stopped making the Commanche around 2007 so its getting pretty old now

My pennies worth, the Icarus 500 will be too small for you.  It's become too small for us 2 adults, so would advise to look for at least a 6/7 birth tent.

As a family of 5 (children ages 3,6 &7) I would advise going for at least a 6 berth tent, remember you will still want something else to cook under too. While I do cook when in a canvas frame tent or trailer tent (with designated kitchen window) I wouldn't in a poly tent (or my bell tent).

I bought the gelert corona 6 from tesco for £59.99 which is similar to the icarus 600 and figured it may not be as good quality but you wouldn't get a secondhand icarus 600 for that and with a cheap tarp as a footprint and carpet on the floor it should still last a few years. I'm considering buying the Evora side porch to cook in and when not cooking a rainy day entrance. Admitedly we have the trailer tent for our main summer holiday and bell tent for my short breaks with the children but without hubby so this will only be used for short family breaks.

I would go for the Icarus, but get the 600 you will need all that space especially if you have another.
It is a great tent and easy to put up.

Of the 2 I would go for the Icarus but I would be looking at the 600 or 800, rather than the 500.

Well I have the Lichfield and love it although would prefer a sig. I love the fact that if we only use the two bedrooms at one end we can open up the other completely. I'll put an additional ground sheet down the next time. Can't comment on the Icarus .

I would go for the Icarus but definitely the 600 - we found the 500 just big enough for two

I've no knowledge of the Lichfield, but I do have the Icarus 500. We have the extension too, and there's only the two of us!
I'd say maybe the 500, but certainly not without the front extension.

I'd think the 600 would be a better bet in the long run, with strong consideration for the extension.

So the landslide continues.....!
