Like you, we are not sure what to attach these hooks to, so we just hook them on to the fixing points for the guy ropes on the other side of the tent. I will be cheeky and follow what others have to say.

We had the same thing with out Outwell Universal canopy so what I did was to tie another guy rope to each of the clips to give extra length, this gives the advantage that you can now walk round the tent holding these ropes and pull the flap of the canopy over the tent from the other side, no more trying to throw them over the tent. When the flap is in position simply tie a loop in the new guys and peg out a suitable distance from the tent. You could of course fit runners to the new guys so the are adjustable but we never bothered

From what I could gather they were supposed to clip on the rings at the bottom of the poles!!!!!

We had one and used to attach the 'over the top' guys to the corner guy top loops. We used to take the extension down overnight in anything more than a moderate breeze as the noise of the extension panels flapping against the main tent kept us awake.

sounds like you have the older extension like ours, the 2011-2012 have longer guy ropes.
I just put the plastic hook through the tent guy ropes where they attach to the tent and had no problems.
