What a horrific experience. I am glad you were not hurt - apart from the bruises and shock.

We took our new Vango Icarus 800 for its first 2-week trip and it did get a bit windy on a couple of nights. We forgot to put the tension straps on the first windy night and it was rather noisy although we stayed upright. With the straps on the next windy night, the whole thing was very stable. The good thing is that it does not have steel poles and the weight is manageable.

We use delta pegs on all the main guys and I am sure that makes a lot of difference.

I also vote for the round shape (teepee or bell tent), or the pyramide shape.

For storm pegs I use those:

They are normally used for dog tethering, but I find that they work great as pegs, they have to go into the ground aligned with the guy rope (not in an angle) to work right, and they are so easy to get into the ground and pulled out again - without a mallet. They have kept my big Karsten tent in place in very strong wind and did not move a millimetre. And they are cheaper then Delta pegs...

I bought 4 trampoline fixing kits a few years back on sale for 10p each, think I got lucky at that price. This was before our camping began as was intended for our trampoline and any friends that had one but only got round to giving one set to the inlaws so still have 3 sets left that look like they will work a treat  Just need to find a use for the straps now.

I think I have driven my family mad this year by refusing to buy a new tent unless I have seen it pitched! So this year we have been to numerous camping shops, and I have been seen slowly walking round several campsites checking out the tents. Also have not rushed to purchase that bargain tent, because the bargains that I tend to find seem to come round again and again!

So my advice would be to work out what style of tent you want - dome, tunnel, bedroom pods beside each other or opposite ends of the tent. Then look at the weight, and if possible go for steel poles as ours have never let us down whilst several tents with fibre glass poles collapsed beside us during one storm. Personally I would not by a tent without a sown in or zipped in ground sheet, so again work out if this is an essential
So work out what you want, check the reviews on this site which are very useful (but remember that few people are going to admit they chose the wrong tent!). Then finally have a look at the prices and work out if your ideal tent is worth saving for or completely unrealistic, and in which case work down the price list until you have a compromise!
happy camping!

Sounds horrific, glad you all ok.

Its very difficult to recommend one particular tent to be honest, as there are so many. If I were you i'd stick to alloy/steel poled tents, as in my experience fibre glass poles flex a lot more and the tent ends up in all shapes. I have a Gelert Meridian in the loft, and once stayed on the cliff tops in Filey. The wind was strong, and whilst the tent survived, it didn't fill me with confidence, the tent blew and flexed all over the place. The next tent I bought was Outwell Wolf Lake, and that was superb in wind, it barely moved.

Have you seen the Outwell Montana wind test on Youtube. There are one or two flaws with the test as the tent looks like its screwed to wood, and it doesn't take into account gusts, which are what generally cause the damage. Even so, its worth a watch.........

Good luck.......

by far the Wild country are the most stable family tents around, we don't stock them as its not a brand customers ask for but I love them. Contact wild country and they will give you the low down on why they are so stable.

I like to go and see tents on windy days to see how they stand up to the wind, when looking at tent displays.

Wire pegs shouldn't spin around in the wind, as the hook end should be embedded into the ground anyway, keeping them steadfast.    (As someone suggested)

Our Vango tigris has always been really stable in high winds, the extra tension straps work wonders. Its a really good sized tent for 4.

We went tent shopping in the wind.  It quickly convinced Mr Joopy to spend more on the Bear Lake as aopposed to the polyester tents.  A lot of that was down to noise levels, but the horizontal bracing support makes the whole thing rock solid in a storm.  I'm not sure it addresses your particular problem, but there are pegs on the zip in groundsheet and on the canvas of the tent a few inches higher so it meets your needs there.

Glad you are all OK.

We had a very windy week in Abersoch last week too. First time our 2nd hand Norfolk Lake had been really tested with high winds, driving rain non-stop for 12 hours and then brilliant sunshine!

The first night of high winds we were prepared and pitched the Norfolk Lake bum to the wind. We use rock pegs and delta ground anchors. I only use wire pegs for groundsheet and they get buried almost.

The second windy day was a little more challenging because it changed to opposite direction so the front end was getting battered.I ended up double pegging the two front pegging points and doubling up guy lines on the front too. As luck would have it I bought more Delta pegs at the Gelert shop the day before because they were 25% off. One of the delta pegs was actually slicing through the ground - admittedly on soft soil in that spot. That day we resorted to using the side entrance as it was impossible to open the front door due to the force of the wind.

Good luck finding your next tent.
