Hi I've just joined hoping some one can give me some advice on royal tents. Me and my family are quite new to camping, and my wife has her eye on the royal athans 6. Are royal tents any good? We have a vango Icarus 500xl been camping 3 time and had to replace tent 3 time first time due to faulty side door zips, second due to leak and third due to faulty front door zip. I don't want to make the same mistake again and jump in and just buy a tent. Please help

We camp with a Vango but our friends have a Royal and it looks good.  They certainly love it, and it has more vents and features than our basic vango, although theirs has a flat groundsheet across the doors which let in rain, where ours has a toggle-up for the bathtub in the doorways. Of course it depends on the model, but they look pretty good to me.

Hi,

We absolutely love our big, sturdy Royal Winnipeg 6 (polycotton, steel frame), though we did have problems with leaks at the front for a while.  All sorted now with the help of Fabsil and now we're more experienced at pitching.  I think we'd pulled the guylines a little too tight in the offending area. I'm confident it'll last us years...mind you it didn't see any action this summer as each time we were free to go camping, the weather put us off.  I guess any tent will last and last, hibernating safely at home rather than working for its keep!

Not sure how robust the polyester Royals are though.  Those we saw on display when we bought ours looked a little flimsy.

Hi there,
We have a Royal Athens 6 and absolutely love it,can't fault it at all, size is perfect, pitching is easier than we imagined and it looks great.

We recently spent 2 weeks in Newquay and the weather was not playing fair,it rained heavily on a few nights and the tent never leaked,it was also very windy one day and the tent didn't budge, even our neighbours on both sides said they were impressed with how sturdy it was.

The only niggle we have is that it's rather on the large size when packed,we have no garage or shed,so storing indoors has caused a few headaches!!

Overall we give it a huge thumbs up,and would definitely recommend it.

Royal tents are fantastic. I have the pescara and it has stood up to horrendous weather. Totally recommend them. It's a pity they aren't better advertised because I think they would give the more well known names a run for their money.

we have the Royal Tampa 6 bought it offf ebay for £100 in May

did not get a change to trial pitch before our 2 weeks hols in France

we are impressed easy to pitch(no instructions with tent although had looked at them on internet a few months before our trip

had rain during night on a couple of nights and the ground sheet toggle door raiser get any water out.

.pack size could compress smaller than how it packs in bag(no compression straps, but we wil add our own, bag large so no problem putting it back in.our previous tent was an Outwell.

think the tent is great valueand will give years of service.

We have the Royal Tokyo 8. It's lovely quality, steel poles, copes very well in the wind and rain. It has lovely panoramic windows. A large tent, but doesn't take over your pitch. Only downside is you cannot buy a canopy for it, which is a great shame, as you don't have an area to cook, but you can out up the front door.

We Love our Royal Hampton 4, it's easy for 2 people to pitch and has room for a table & 4 chairs inside if raining. Recently spent a very stormy weekend in a puddle filled field in Whitney & stayed lovely & dry in our trusty Royal! 1 downside is it's quite big when down so not easy to store or to fit it into my small hatchback!

Thanks everyone for the advice. The company I bought my tent off last year have said that will try fix the zip on my Icarus 500XL if not they will replace it with the 2012 model so I might not have to buy new tent after all. Excellent customer service from outdoor megastore.

Hi, we were looking at the Tokyo 6 at Tony Wild Camping at the weekend and really like the look of it but were put of by the lack of canopy/extention but talking to the guys they informed me that the Royal canopy will fit the Tokyo 6 on the side door in the same manner as the Hampton model. There is also a review on this site of the Tokyo 6 and the owner has also bought the extention and fitted it no problems so it might be worth checking with your local dealers
