Hi All
Looking for someone to recommend or advice on what tent to buy for our camping trips in 2013. We currently have a kyham Ontario 8 which we have had for 5 years, however after a couple of severe winds trips to shell island this year, a few of the poles are damaged and so we wondered if it was time to go for something a little more sturdy, replace the poles or buy another kyham ( we don't think you can beat the Ontario on space for the price.

We would appreciate any advice on suitable sturdy tents?????

Hi Woode, From personal experience of high winds in Glencoe, all of my steel framed tents have survived unscathed. My Outwell Carolina especially, has seen some pretty foul weather over the past couple of years. I reckon anything with a steel frame should be capable of surviving severe winds. Some, obviously, better at it than others! I have Outwells, Vangos and a couple of lesser known tents. It depends on your intended use I suppose.

More air frame tents are beginning to come to market now and I will be seriously having a gander at some of them. My thinking being that in a severe gust, the air frame will bend, deflect and bounce back into shape!

I would not advise replacing poles, especially on a 5yr old tent. The life of the fabric and the price of poles might be prohibitive.

Couldn't agree more about the space the Ontario 8 gives - we love ours!

How many poles are damaged or need replacing?
If it is only one or two, then investing in something like this might be worthwhile:

Alternatively, after 5 years, your Ontario may be starting to show signs of becoming less waterproof, so you could either invest £200 in another Ontario from Khyam

Thanks everyone.

We have looked at a Kampala croyde which seems quite spacious, looking for at least 5/6 berth and would rather not pay more than £500.

We have talked about buying another kyham, as we so pleased with apart from the poles, so would like to go for steel poles next time.

Every Poe has sections in it which need replacing and we did look into trying to buy a whole new set instead as we thought we have had 5 good years of use out of the tent and poles, and then have the tent professionally washed and re-proofed but had quotes for £150 so next thought was it might be just as much money to buy a new tent and the models etc are so much better now than they were 5 years ago.

You wont go far wrong with the Croyde 6 great quality steel poled tent for a decent price and the front canopy can be rolled back if not needed. Colour is changing for 2013 together with a few minor improvements.

How about a Bell Tent of 2nd hand Outwell Bear Lake 6/Wolf lake 7. The outwells are pretty much bomb proof and withstand eveything that our weather can/has thrown at them....
