Apologies if this has already been posted previously, I know there are hundreds of posts about Bell Tents!

I put up our Bell Tent Standard today from Belltent.co.uk and I am really happy with the whole tent except I had real problems tucking in the mud guard as the groundsheet is already pegged down. I couldn't get the mud guard to go around the pegs or sit propely and I wished at that point that I had spent more and got the ZIG version!

I have read that some bell tent owners unpeg the groundsheet once all their gear is in so that the mud guard can be tucked in properly which is an option. With two kids and a dog I would like to have a really secure seal around the tent. I thought that I could simply put in some eyelets so that I could peg the mud guard down then have the  un pegged groundsheet on top.

Belltent.co.uk say not to do that as it will cause the mud guard to rip, however, Soulpad bell tents come with eyelets in the mud guards!

Has anybody put eyelets into a mud guard of a bell tent? I thought that I could strengthen the area first with a rubber patch then put on the eyelet to help prevent too much tension on the fabric. I don't want to do this though if there is a high chance of the fabric tearing.

Any advice will be greatly received and I do listen! I went from a 4m bell to a 5m after reading/posting on this site. It really is helpful....

Many thanks

Eve

Hi, I can't help with your query about putting eyelets in but I do have the Soulpad lite with separate groundsheet. Even when pegged together the groundsheet doesn't lie flat and neat. The pegging point on the mudguard is on the furthest edge from the canvas so when pegged through the groundsheet it kind of bunches up. Hard to explain and as I read it back it doesn't make much sense but if you look on youtube for soulpad there is a video showing them putting up the lite and how it pegs.

If you wanted to do similar on your belltent, it shouldn't cause any strain if you put them in the same place. I haven't had an issue with it being pegged in this way, have a look and see if it helps

This topic was covered in great detail a few years ago, when bell tents became popular (again).
I had the soulpad 5mtr version, and this was supposed to be able to be pegged down, but in truth, the eyelets were no where near to lining up. as the mud flap and the ground sheet eyelets were fitted at different circumferences. I fitted a new set that lined up. I could never understand why one company said it would tear the fabric, as it is under no load once the side walls are pegged down.
When I say it was covered in great detail, I mean that loads of people moaned about how bad it was, and also that the door A frame caused problems, me included
At the end of the day, I'm sure you will enjoy the experience once you decide how to set up the ground sheet best for your needs.

Hadn't thought about doing that raf, seems such an obvious and simple solution

Thank you for the replies, it really is appreciated. Raf, one more question for you (sorry!) How did you put the eyelets in? I'm not sure if I need to put a patch down first or just the eyelet. I have been told that it will rip the mud guard but as you say there isn't going to be that much tension...

I did try to search for the post without much luck. Thank you again

I've rarely managed to get the search function to work for me.
I can't answer for sure, as I've modified so many tents to suit me, but I think I used brass eyelets, but no extra patch. I have used tenacious tape first on some nylon fabrics to reinforce the general area, as it can stretch and come off.
