Hi sorry if this seems to be a silly question weve just purchsed our first tent a kampa croyde my question is is it ok to set up my kitchen unit and cooker in the tent and cook in the tent or should i do it outside ?

You want ventilation, and you want to keep heat sources away from tent material (even if it is fire retardant, it will still burn away, rather than flame up!).
Any spills on to your sewn in groundsheet may prove problematic, too.
Plus you may have lingering smells to consider.

Yes you can cook inside, with care.... but outside (or even in a canopy/under a tarp) is so much safer and wiser.

Our kitchen is set up in our tent as we don't have a tarp or canopy to cook under at the moment. We have a kitchen stand with a 3-sided guard on it, which helps protect the tent. We always watch whatever is cooking and whenever possible have the door open, tho making a hot water bottle for last thing at night is done with the door closed, having said that the last trip to the toilet block before bed vents the tent.

We are careful and so far have had no issues but we are aware of the risks regarding fire and fumes and as long as you keep that in mind and act sensibly cooking in the tent is OK.

We also have gas heaters and lights which is another no-no but again we are sensible and apply common sense.

As well as fire, CO (carbon monoxide) is a real danger that must be considered. The death in the area near me a couple of years ago was from disposable BBQ that was not even burning anymore.

Personally I would never cook in my main sleeping tent, the smell, condensation and grease very quickly build up (even without spills). Where I used to work we used bell tents to cook in on expeditions and they were utterly minging.

I use a tarp, sometimes with a windbreak. Thinking of a kitchen tent next year, but if the weather is so bad I can't cook outside with tarp/windbreak (which for me it has to be pretty bad) we all head down to the local chippy.

For us the solution was a dedicated kitchen tent, it frees up tent space, and any spillages are contained away from the main tent.

Another reason is that it's best to keep foodstuffs away from the main tent, just in case a there is a grizzly bear running a mock on the campsite looking for something to eat.

As you have got a kampa croyde you could cook under the built in porch/shelter,should be more than adequate to keep you dry but you still have to be careful.I have cooked inside tents but made sure the cooker is next to a door thats not used so it can then be opened fully when cooking to allow for good ventilation and also there's no tent material near the cooker,hope that makes sense! Either way I think the key is never leave the cooker unattended whilst in use and to use your common sense.

carrieon, welcome to UKCS. You'll get very definite views on this. Usually along the lines of cook in a tent and you will go straight to hell

In France this year we'll be hoping to set up the kitchen stand and stove outside, weather depending. If not, we'll use it indoors. We're adults, and can evaluate risk, and take appropriate care.

In our Orchy we always used the stove inside. Our FC had a canvas top and a full gas oven and hob inside. Our frame tent had an inside section specifically for cooking.

Take care however you set up, and enjoy your new tent

Thanks for all the replies just want sure if it was too dangerous ill be getting a stand with a surround and will be standing at the cooker while cooking as ive 5 small kids :)
