Hey, all Outwell Yosemite, Yellowstone and Niagara Falls owners.

I might have found a solution to the pitching problems we all seem to have with threading the poles. It is all down to the fact that the sleeve is on the inside of the tent.

It takes 2 of you and one of you gets underneath the flysheet!

Using the 'Garry Cross' method of pegging the corners and then threading the middle pole first. The person on the inside (note: best if its the taller of the two!) helps guide the pole as its being pushed in by the outside helper. This ensures that the sleeve is flat and not gathered, which is where all the problems are when try to thread each pole.

Once the middle pole is threaded it then gives a bit if space underneath the canvas... with the other poles then threaded in the same way from the middle outwards..... works a treat and just as quick as pitching the normal outwell polycotton tents.

Only downside and it's only for the person inside the tent... it can get a little warm and your arms can start to ache after a while! Also, guess there is a minimum height requirement (or just use something to stand on).

Taking down was the reverse of putting up.

Not the best picture, but me on the inside guiding the pole nicely through:

Hope this works for some of you.

Once up.....woth all the effort.....

We once tried one of us getting inside the tent but found the weight of the canvas on your head /neck quite uncomfortable. Do you use anything to prop up the canvas from the inside while inserting the first pole ?
Your tent set up looks great, can't wait to get back in ours !

hi jack nice photos, we have tried the water inside the sleeve poles works fantastic, think the strain of canvas would be a bit too much for the mrs inside the tent .
we found that pegging the back 2 corners down first then slide poles in from front to back , then raise back pole then work to front had no problems at all
its each to there own but if you find your way easy stick with it mate
and your right about when its up they look fantastic cant wait for our holiday down at hendra in newquay end of july well worth the investment in the ambiente range thanks shaun

Thanks for your comments Vicki and Shaun,

Vicky,I did find that once the middle pole was up (thanks to Garry Cross) the other poles were really easy as the canvas was supported by upright pole. The first one required more effort as you had to hold up the canvas although it was ok for me.

Yes I will give the water lube a go and compare, cheers Shaun. Have a great trip. I'm sure you will fall even more in love with your Yosemite, such a great tent.

I think the advantage of being inside the tent is you can see the internal sleeve and stop/rectify the gathering of fabric at the front of the pole.

Some pics to wet your appetite (this is the yellowstone):

Hi and thanks for the comments,

The tarp really made a big difference and I got the idea from this site! There are quite a few threads on various tarps, I eventually decided to go for the 'Wenka tarp' off ebay its a good quality cream coloured canvas and quite big 3mx5m.

Needed to lower the sides in rain to stop water gathering in the middle and also will need to provide some padding between the tarp and tent where the poles are. I have noticed a little damage to the flysheet on the ridges due to rubbing in high winds.

It was a 9 night trip, so worth the effort, the challenge now is to find a good weekend set up, now we are used to all this!

Lovely set up and must agree that its a lovely tent - I don't own one, but we did consider it for a while as it ticks a lot of boxes and love the layout. We have a Vango Airbeam tho for ease of pitching

Last trip hubby just decided to thread all the poles himself without my "help". So I did the pole construction he threaded. We had footprint down, and poles in at 17 minutes. We've now had our Yellowstone pitched 5 times and the pole sleeves are a bit looser, or we know where we struggle. We've got it down to 45-50 mins to get up, zig and bedrooms in and pegged.

Weekend tent, we've just bought a second hand yukon river 4, it's the right colour, nearly right material and I can lift it alone and I'd have a go at pitching it alone ;-) things I can't say about my beloved Yellowstone. We also left it as one when we took it down, not an option with the Yellowstone due to the weight and we'd never get it back in the bag.
