"Dad why is the bedroom pod a funny shape?" says a very innocent looking child. "s**t not again!" says a frustrated dad.
This was the second pole to go in successive trips which led me to dream of replacing our Vango Diablo 400xp,
Heres my feeble reasons why -
the particular colour of my tent is white and light blue??? which believe me at 4:00 on a summers morn is not i repeat not ideal place to be.
i have continuing problems getting what looks like dust smudges from the front porch area particularly on the white parts. I had originally thought that it was a slight mildew problem but no cleaner that i have come across can shift it. Damn you Barrie Scott!!! Cillit bang my A***!
It is over 6 years old and owes me nothing, the poles are all on there way out and it does look a tired tend.
Saying that it has never let me down in all weathers and never had any leakage issues.
Now.., where do i go from there? I would like a tent that is achievable to put up alone as i do occasionally camp alone and though my little Karrimor Beta is fine, a nice place to sit would be nice as laying down has sedative like effect especially after some walking.. It has to be roomy for me to take my 2 daughters and sometimes my son(16 not cool to be seen with Dad) and all our things too. The Diablo's bag is huge and dominates my Ford Focus boot which is a massive nuisance as i have plenty enough to take already.
Do i go for a super new Air Beam system or tried and trusty Outwell or even just go cheap and cheerful? 4 berth or 5, would they be practical for solo camping? Aaarrggh why did i start this???
Who better to ask than the people who do it every weekend and will not be after a little commision.
So if anybody would like to offer any advice or knowledge please feel free but thanks for taking the time to read this as i know there must be a million of these every year.
Oh and childproof poles would be nice too....

If you have the budget for an Airbeam why not! Bear in mind that the pack size is big and it is heavy too. Same goes for steel poled tents, except at least you can carry the poles separately and that will reduce the weight when you're lugging it out of the car. But then a steel poled tent is more sturdy when it comes to bad weather.

I think the best thing to do is get to a tent display and have a wander around. Look our for the new Vangos which have a darker bedroom pod (makes so much sense) and Kampa which have a darker section over the bedroom pod. Go for one with big windows, like the Easycamp Boston range. If you're stuck indoors in the rain at least you won't feel like you're in a cave.

We have an airbeam and it is very sturdy - we had some very wet and windy weather whilst we were on our last trip away and the tent didn't move. It was as solid as our Cougar Lake!

Go and look round some tent displays to get some ideas - great fun!

Thanks for the advice people. There isnt a great deal of tent displays or showrooms in middlesbrough apart from go outdoors. I must do some research as I went to few shows before.

I recently bought a Kampa Oxwich 5 tent. This is for two of us and a tunnel tent but should be put uppable on your own (if you look at the Cross Camping clip on You Tube of how to put a tunnel tent up).

We struggled to put it up to test it out recently but that is only because our garden is so small and there was, literally, not enough room to lay the poles out. That aside, on a nice camping pitch, this is a good tent. It was quite gusty when we put it up and it didn't move. It is also pretty light and the pack size isn't bad at all. It was one of the things we looked at before we decided to buy it. We also have a Ford Focus and it isn't going to take up the whole boot so that is a definite bonus. There should be enough room for whatever amount of children you take with you too. We bought it because it offered the right amount of space for us and all our gear, you can stand up in it (myself and hubby are both tall) and there is a nice sitting area with a front door that doubles as a canopy and a side door with rain cover and fly door.

In view of the colour of your previous tent, I should mention the colour, it is a mocha colour and, whilst not my favourite colour, it's not too bad at all.

They do it in a 4, 5 and 6 but I think the 6 might be too big.

Whatever tent you decide on though, you might have to travel a bit to see one. As was suggested to me when I posted to see if anyone knew where the Oxwich was on display, "it's a tunnel tent what's there to see?" well, you want to make sure it is the right size, the right pack size etc. Even with the best imagination in the world, even with dimensions, you still want to see one.

Whilst we were looking we saw a Kampa Air Tent and a Vango Airbeam tent too and, they are lovely.

Good luck and hope you find somewhere to go and see tents and hope you manage to find something that suits.

If you can stretch to it, look at a 2nd hand outwell polycotton, some great savings to be had on new prices, once tried there's no turning back, no rustling, no mildew, cool in the heat, warmer at night, definitely a case of you get what you pay for. Gaz
