Hi All,

Please have patience - this is my first posting.

I'm looking to get a tent, so that my better half and our youngest son (9) can have trips away - for as long as a week. It is possible, that our eldest son (17) might deign to come with us - but I don't think this is likely, so we require a tent for 3, with the option to take 4 if required.

I don't want to spend too much, 'cos first, we need to see if camping is for us. We require a tent which is fairly easy to set up, is waterproof and has enough room.

I've narrowed my choices down to :

Sprayway Hood River 4 - £199

Gobi 4 £149, but £209 with carpet & footprint

Aztec Mardi Gras 5 £159 or £189 inc. footprint & front extension

All of the above come to around £200 - which I'd like to make my spending limit. However, at that price range, the Gobi 4 and the Aztec have extras; also, the Aztec is a nominal 5 berth.

I'd value any opinions on my choices; is there a more 'obvious' tent that I should be considering ?

Thank you !

I've just noticed, I can buy a new SunnCamp Invader 600 6 berth Family Tent, for £219 . . . but perhaps it would be too large ?

Frankly, I'm becoming bewildered by the number of tents available.

Hi and welcome. i have no experience with the tents you mentioned but i have with a sunncamp 6 berth tent.It has a large bedroom which would easily fit in a double and single airbed and the smaller bedroom would fit a single. Your 9 yr old could have his own room or share with you when 17 year old comes. You need to see tents in the flesh at a showroom to get a proper feel for them. What we also did was imagined being stuck in the tent in bad weather with a child, so you do need plenty of living space. Good luck.

For two adults, plus one definite child (who is fast heading onwards and upwards, no doubt!), plus the possibility of another, already strapping teenager, I would aim for no less than a 5 berth, and preferably a 6!

Berths are based on how many people you can lay on the floor, side by side, nigh on shoulder to shoulder!!

They don't account for airbed or camp bed sizes!
Rule of thumb, in considering the berth required, is "The number of real people, plus two imaginary"!! :-)

On that note, I believe this is the latest bargain...

No idea if it's any good or not, as I'm not familiar with it, sorry!

Many thanks for the replies - much appreciated !

I hope this doesn't seem a 'daft' question, but are the larger tents significantly cooler (less snug) than the smaller ones ? . . . and IF that is the case, would some kind of heater by advisable ?

Thank you all, for your help !
