I'm new to camping. Want to get into it as it seems great fun and a good value alternative to hotels and b&bs.

I initially had my eyes/heart set on a Gelert or Outwell 4 man tent. There were a few, mostly for about £200-£250.

However soon I realised I just couldn't afford tent + everything else. I want to make it a regular holiday, so want cooker, table chairs electric pack, etc...

Today I saw Halfords were doing a 4 man tent package:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductMobileDisplay?catalogId=10151&storeId=10001&productId=836923&categoryId=236906&langId=-1

The tent comes with a blow up mattress, lantern, sleeping bags. That's for £180. The tent is reviewed on this site and it is very positive.

Also they do a package with same tent but with a footprint for £200.

Any thoughts?

Hi,

My advice would be buy the best tent you can afford. You can take a lot of items from home (eg Duvets). If you can beg or borrow camping items try to do this. Don't spend loads of money on camping stuff until you've managed to get away for a couple of times and decide it's your thing

Don't rule out traditional canvas tents like Cabanon as you can pick up some real used bargains (just make sure you get to see it though).

Halfords tents won't hold their value, Vango or Outwell will. If you decide it's not for you can sell the tent and get most of your money back.

Brian is right; but if it matches your budget, then at least it will keep the dew off you. The tent looks like an OK starter option; the airbeds look horrible but might last a few trips; the sleeping bags OK for summer camping.

There's other threads here on basic kit lists; but I'd steer clear of electrics to start with, particularly on a budget.

Welcome to the great outdoors; hope you all have a great time. Just find some sites where you can all have great adventures!

Thanks everyone - you're help is really appreciated.

I'm keen to get started that's all. I just don't want to wait till next year, but I'm not sure I can afford a tent at the minute. Will keep looking.

Some of the sites look brilliant.

I'm looking for ones that have facilities - e.g. good toilets and showers, some that have entertainment, or at least near to pubs and some other things.

E.g. not just in the woods alone.

People are always asking for camping kit on my local freecycle, so it's worth a try.

Decathlon, if there is one near you is good for sleeping bags, Aldi have a cheap camp cooker and other stuff in at the moment.

Otherwise pound shops and Wilko's are good for plates, cups, kettles etc.

Jules

Hi Brian (aka rochford6?),

Hereby a reply on your last post, as I'm wondering if you are still active on this forum? :-)

Three Dutch campers here, with a question on the Superieur 6 Hypercamp tent, you've reviewed and used back in 2009 until....... :-)

(we bought one of the last ones produced in 2019 at Obelink and still very happy with it)

Hope you will reply and if so, looking forward to it.
Thank you in advance for the effort.
Thank you in advance.

rochford6 hasn't posted since 2013, of course this doesn't mean they are not around and might see your request.

XVI yes?

As well is two words!

Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.

Hi Toco. Welcome to UKCS.
If you tap on the person’s name, you can see the dates of their recent posts. Rochford6 last posted in 2013, the year of this thread that you’ve added to. I think it’s safe to say they aren’t active here any more.
There may be comments about the tent you’re asking about if you use the Search function. If that doesn’t work, try posting a new specific question about it.

Why not look for something second hand. We have loads of tents and all the gear always up for sale around us. People seem to buy everything and then decide it’s not for them.
