Hi guys - I've never really been a big camper but I had the need to buy a tent and all the other bits and bobs for use at car shows. I braught a Vango Diablo 600 off eBay and I quite liked it. Now the kids and the mrs have gone and booked a week in the lakes and as I have 3 kids - one girl 3 and two boys 7 and 11 I feel I need a tent with at least 3 bedrooms so I've put the 600 back up for sale.

I have had my eye on the new Vango Diablo 900 xl and was about to order one however I have learned today that vango will discontinue the 900 at the end of the year. I don't want to be stuck with a tent that I can no longer get bits for or one they will instantly improve. But I do like the look of the 900 !

So I really want something with 3 or more big bedrooms prefab ally with a little space between them - I don't like the ones that are decided off with a bit of cloth ! Lots of windows and a nice tall living area. I also don't like tents you "add on" a canopy to make another areA. And a big must I'd having the ability to pitch the fly sheet first - my current older diablo has to pitch the inner first and then drape the fly over it and I've never got it perfect yet !

Don't sell the Vango - get the boys their own 'pup' tent to sleep in. Gives them something to do while you're setting up, and also a measure of independence.

If you like the Diablo my thoughts would be get one quick before they get discontinued! I already did that with one tent although the company changed their mind and didn't discontinue it after all, and just as I was about to buy another one in case the first one wore done from overuse!

The 'bits' you refer to is poles and zips, all univeral. A pole, steel or flexible, can be cut simply with a hacksaw to the correct size. The 'ferrules' which are the metal bits on the end of a flexible pole, are available for every flexible pole diameter on the market. The ring and pins are universal. The elastic needed to re-string flexible poles can be bought in Halfords.

If the tent fabric gets torn you can repair it with 'Tear Aid' or 'Tenacious Tape' and if it really gets bad it can be sent off for repair to a sail maker or tent repair specialist for sorting out.

My point is, if you like the style of tent then go for it. The dilemma about something better, we all have that with car purchases and phones and other items so at some point you have to just go for it. I have seen tents increase in price over the last four years especially and don't think next years will be any different. We really have reached a stage where a grand for a large family tent is not unusual. Was it only a few short years ago you could drop a couple of hundred pounds and get a decent tent that would last your family for years!

The Vango Maritsa 700 may be an option, though not sure how it compares in size to the Diablo (suspect it is probably a bit smaller). Has a built in porch and 3 bedrooms though.
