Just read another thread about tent rips and taking the tent to be repaired.

We've got a small L shaped rip in our tent, probably about 4 inches by 4 inches. Is this not something we can repair at home or do I have to take it somewhere?

Sorry, I should explain... (just got back from camping and not very awake!)

We bought one of those nylon tent repair things on site to patch it up, but it doesn't seem to have stuck well, or to be a longer term solution.

Do I just need to try to put it on properly?

Should you iron it on??? (I suspect not...)

Firstly dont iron it unles you want to melt your tent.
You could try using "Tenacious Tape" or "Tear Aid" both self adhesive and easy to use.

A patch of Tenacious Tape on both sides will be fine if it's not in a high stress area. If it is somewhere that's under a lot of tension it would be better properly patched with a sewn patch. You can do this yourself if you feel confident, have the right materials and can reach the area with a sewing machine but...if it's a valuable tent with lots of life left in it then it's probably better to have it done by a professional.

Tear Aid is very good for tension areas, we have just repaired the seam between our vinyl window and zip using it and it has done a fantastic job, never shifted at all. We were recommended Tear Aid #2 and I paid about £8 for a 6" x 6" square, definitely a very good investment. Someone else on here had been quoted £100 for a similar repair.

Another recommendation for Tenacious tape (from experience!) although I have heard nothing but good for this 'ere Tear Aid, too!

I was all for Tenacious Tape Mucker, and indeed still have two or three rolls of the stuff in my kit, but I am now a total Tear Aid convert. Tenacious Tape was no use whatsoever on our tear due to the tension of the area it was in, Tear Aid #2 has so much give in it and repaired the tear fantastically. I did use my tenacious tape last week when we found several tiny pin holes in our porch, brilliant for that.

This Tear aid sounds very good. I looked it up it and found you can have type A or type B, does anybody who has used it know the difference and which one would be best to use as a polyester tent repair? Thanks

I was advised by someone on here to get #2 as that has some give in it and is better for vinyl window tears.

I’m another fan of Tear Aid. Tenacious Tape is great but having used both products I found Tear Aid more pliable. As mentioned you have two types of Tear Aid, Type A and Type B. Type A is for fabric repairs and type B for vinyl repairs, generally type A is the one to buy. I believe TraceyD used type B as it was for a PVC/Vinyl window repair.

As this is for a tent flysheet, I believe you require type A.

Tear Aid sounds perfect, and far cheaper than sending it away to be fixed. Not a stress area, so just needs to be waterproof and reasonably tidy looking, so that should do it.

Good luck and post how you get on (ideally with before and after pictures). As Arsenaldes has mentioned keep that iron away from the tent....unless you want an even bigger hole!

I used type A on a canvas tarp I ripped at the guying point. It's been brilliant. Tear aid is used to fix holes in the Millenium Dome so is very strong. I'm a total convert.
