Hi,
Planning to upgrade this year as our 10 year old Coleman Michigan 9 Tent (+vango extension) finally gave up last year. We have 3 kids (two girls and a boy 9)so are looking at 3 bedroom tents. I like the idea of the Vermont XLP 2013/2014 but have also seen a second hand wolf lake 7 2011 for £700. I suppose my questions are mainly:
Which is larger once packed? (we have a touran and small roof box but would rather not have a trailer).
Which is the better longterm purchase?
I guess they are similar to put up.
Anything else to consider?
Thanks
Tim

Hi
The Wolf would have the bigger pack size due to the polycotton material. However in my view its a much nicer tent than the Vermont due to the material. Virtually condensation free, warmer when its cold, cooler when its hot, doesnt sound like a empty crisp packet in the wind and the material is much longer lasting

We have a Vermont, and love it. But id snatch the hand off the person selling the Wolf Lake for £700, the fact that its polycotton alone makes it the better option.

As above, once you have had a cotton/polycotton tent you will not want anything else. There will be a compromise with the size of the bags and weight of the Wolf lake but worth it.

Current tent line-up (all outwell)
Yellowstone falls - for week or more
Clear lake - Flyball team entertainment
Cedar lake - not been used yet!
Trout lake 6 - short weekend trips

Hi we have the xlp and love it we also looked around the wolfie but it was a 2013 model
The reasons we went for the xlp were
Weight and pack size
No zip up curtains
No curtains in the porch area
£300 for the porch attachment/vestibule
These were the reasons why we had the xlp
Also we can just about hang the xlp up in stages in the garage to dry out don't think you could do this with the wolfie because of the extra weight when wet
But either way they are both great tents
Good luck with your decision

I looked at the Wolf Lake and then bought an Obelink Familia 6 from Holland. When we went camping last year we were pitched next to a Wolf Lake and honestly they looked almost identical. The Familia has 3 bedroom pods, a large living space and a further porch area that is enclosed by a mesh screen. I did all my cooking in there so the smells went out through the screen but the bugs couldn't get in! The cost of the new Familia was around £650 including delivery although I think the cost has gone up a fraction this year.

Love my Vermont, even though it is polyester once it's pitched with the steel poles it has hardly any movement or russle normally heard.
The bedroom pods are huge, and easily accommodate 2 camp beds with plenty of room to walk all the way round in the bigger pod, and a double air bed in the other.
It is good value for money if you price match, like we did and got ours for £750.
The zip up curtains are just luxury and I simply love my tent.
The side extension is brilliant at adding extra space and room

Good luck with choosing your tent, and hope this helps a little.

I am looking to buy an xlp right now, have seen it at 740 for just the tent or 850 for tent and footprint and carpet. (Thefamilytentshop)

For me, the practicalities of the xlp outweigh the luxuries of polycotton, I would not have much space to thoroughly dry out a poly cotton if it got packed up wet, but polyester is easier, lighter and quicker. Also, I think I will be doing most of the pitching on my own, I think poly cotton would be much more effort!!!

With the Zip In Groundsheet on the Outwell Lakes means the actual Flysheet isnt that much heavier. For 2014 Outwell list the Wolf lake 7 flysheet as only 2kg heavier than the Vermont XLP.
As for pitching when we changed from polyester I didnt find much difference. I pitch on my own and can have the Polycotton Kampa up in about the same time as our old Vermont.
At the end of the day its all down to personal choice we had a Vermont for 6 years with no problems great tent, but having now used polycottons for 2 years I certainly wouldnt go back to polyester.

Just thought I'd tell you what happened. I found a croyde 8 classic 2013 nearly new on eBay and managed to buy for £370. It arrived today, pack size appeared big but probably no larger than our other options. Will be using in the summer and will update you then.

I thought the classic (polycotton) version of the Croyde was new for 2014. Did you get a prototype... Or am I mistaken?
