We've always had a small frame tent, our raclet is a 4 birth with a bedroom space that is the same size as the living space. It's cozy but for weekends, we tend to only go when its nice weather so we dont all need to squeeze in with the cooking equipment...
We've just sold our massive Norfolk Lake as we've made the decision that we will only go for short breaks now, and we are going to buy an Outwell Nevada MP as this seems to suit our needs best (2 adults, 2 growing boys & a dog)
I think you need to go round as many tent displays as possible, and just be in the space to see if you think you will fit. Ideally we will get the front awning if we do decide to start camping for longer again, and hopefully the boys will have their own pup tents as I can't imagine they would want to share a tent bedroom for much longer.
