Hi,

We are just about to but an outwell harrier xl and were wondering what sleeping bag people are putting todlers (20 month old boy) in?

We have had a look around go outdoors adn online but all we can find for junior sleeping bags are 2 season ones with comfort down to 7 degrees. I personally think he will get a bit chilly in that.

Also are there any recommendations for airbeds with sides on so he cant fall out?

Thanks in advance,

Matt

Hi
I would go for a junior ready bed. Air bed and attached sleeping bag in one. They can't fall out, and smaller so better warmth. I added blankets as required as usually only 2 seasoned.

When we looked at bags for our two boys we looked at junior bags and discounted them - not as much choice with seasons, as you've found, and they would quickly grow out of them.

We bought a normal decent three season adult bag and initially just strapped a belt/strap about half-way down the bag so they didn't slip/wriggle down into it during the night. As they got older, somewhere between 3 and 4, we removed the belt/strap. They're now 5 and 4 they'll be able to use them for years to come.

They're pretty big (long) though due to the 'headboard' bit. May struggle to fit one into a bedroom pod of a tent. We had them for our boys for trips/visits away to family/friends, not camping, and they were great, but I don't think they're really suitable for camping, simply not warm enough. Yes you can put blankets on top, but with the way they wriggle around at that age they'll soon end up knocked off and them waking up cold.

Thanks for all the replays.

We have managed to get to go outdoors today and found a hi gear ridge line convertible sleeping bag. It's a 3 season length adjustable bag so will hopefully be good until he is around 7 years old 😄.

Thanks again

Something else for you to think about: In our experience children don't seem to stay in their sleeping bags as adults do, so we've always put our girls in vest, thermals, thick socks & fleecy onesies so even when they no longer have a sleeping bag around them they are still toastie warm - obviously amount of clothing depends on temperature but they have still managed to stay warm like this even with temperatures near to freezing. I've also got friends that have put very little ones to bed in snowsuits.

On the subject of beds: we have tried all sorts. The ready beds were useless. The first morning we found our daughter sleeping on the ground with the readybed upside down on top of her, although she did somehow manage to stay inside the sleeping bag! She rolled off normal airbeds. We then thankfully found the Kampa junior beds which are airbeds with sides on them, although they only have a very thin air strip on the bottom. They were in these until about 6 years old. We then swapped to fold up beds because they naturally sag a little in the middle & so don't roll out of them.

Hope that helps.

We also have the Kampa Junior airbed which is great, my little one slept in PJ's fleecy suit and Grobag on the airbed with an extra fleecy blanket for after we went to bed and seemed fine - I may look at the 3 seasons bag for him now as he is too big for the grobag now he's 3. Thanks :)
