Hi

How do you guys keep cotton/polycotton tent fly clean? Where I camp in USA, we are usually in the forest under the tree. In the past, I've noticed tree saps and other things on the tent fly after camping (especially after a rain). Given that cotton/polycotton tents are expensive, I would like to protect it from tree saps and such.

Has anyone tried draping a lightweight tarp over the tent to catch these tree saps?

Any other solutions?

Am I being paranoid?

Hi
Outwell sell a product called Clean Guard which is meant to safely remove tree sap and bird mess. There is a waterproof coating on the polycotton to help water bead off which wears off in time, and also wears by abrasion. If you have to scrub an area you may therefore also need to spot reproof the area. Outwell sell a product called Water Guard for this.

This is an area I am keen to learn in too. My tent is cotton and I have been using water and a cloth to deal with such mess to date.

I remember reading you once got loads of bird mess on your Bear Lake when you had it, did water alone clean that, or did it leave stains? I found on our Bear Lake and now Harrier that the outside ended up looking fine, but when viewing from inside looking up through the roof it was visible as a darkish mark still. Shows up more on lighter panels, sadly the Harrier has a light grey roof compared to the green of the BL.

Warm water held on to soak seemed to lighten the stain compared to wiping with cold water.

I think mild ph neutral soap might be okay, but a local tour of Tesco, Sainsburys, Wilkos etc failed to find anything (ie pure soap flakes). Have ordered some of the Outwell stuff now as I presume that is much the same.

Hi Jim, did you ever notice stains on the extension? Cos it got covered!

I did perform the truly disgusting task of thoroughly cleaning it and only used warm water and a sponge.

I've followed this with the Karstens, although if it's really dry I try a brush first.

There are slight marks left behind though :-(

You did a good job as I didn't notice anything! :) Checked it carefully before I sold it and there was nothing that stood out. Did you clean it once you got home or while it was still fresh, I can never decide whether to leave it or tackle it as I find it? Can be a daily task on some sites even when not under trees...

I cleaned it there, so the oldest 'poos' would have been 2-3 days old. I clean as soon as I see it now, too fearful about it marking and/or deteriorating the cotton somehow. Weirdly I think the biggest help is the rain... not that I wish for that often!

Thanks Basichendo. Think I'll stick with the wash ASAP like you, for the same reason. I do the same with my car too as soon as I see bird poo, if it can eat into car paintwork it's fair to say it's no good for canvas or polycotton!! Re the front extension, just saw on the completed listings on eBay that someone sold one for £404 OMG!!
