Hi!

Looking this tents I can notice that Outwell changed polycotton ratios from Maui Reef having 65% cotton 35% Poly and new Newgate 5 having 65% Poly and 35% cotton.

Questions:
- what does change in material ratio means in performance like: water resistance and breathability? I would says Maui Reef should be more airflow in sunny days but it will not dry as fast as new Newgate 5.

Any notice or experiences seeing both tents? I do not have option to check them live and what material change means.

I notice that Rubens still using old Outwell material combination.

Having 1 Manui Reef in stock (model 2013) and I can find some more stock on Newgate 5. Price for both tents is equal.

What would be your recommendation?

Thanks!

When we were researching our tent, we 'tested' may tents at a Camping World on a scorcher of a day. Not surprisingly, the most stifling and humid tents were the 100% polyester, followed by the polycottons and then the full cottons.

Even Cabanon's all-season acrylic-coated polyester Biscaya, which is supposed to be breathable, was considerably hotter than their full cotton Awaya - even though the Biscaya has significantly more ventilation. (That should tell you something!)

So, although I do not have any direct experience of the tents you mention (although we did consider one of the Reef tents), my guess would be that the new ratio of polyester to cotton would be hotter and less breathable than the old ratio.

Equally, what would this mean for longterm exposure to U.V.?

The new tents are no cheaper and the cynic in me would see them as a cost-saving exercise. If it were me, I'd go with the Maui.

Kang:

Thanks for replay. I am still thinking since Newgate 5 have also some advantages.

right now we are camping in Maui Reef 2011-2012 model and we found it much more cozy than our 100%poly cotton. So we are thinking to buy something similar.

Maui stock is really limited (hard to find in EU) where Newgate 5 price is 180 € lower than Maui 2013 model.

So hard to decide ... ;)

Take care

What do you mean exactly by saying above? I am looking at maui reef which is 2 years old and because of the sun color is quite washed off.

So it means that more poly in tent will "destroy" it faster becasuse of uv?

Is there any recommendation to put uv protection on this type of tents (cotton, poly)?

Also when it is raining material do not put away the wather from it but it rather absorb the water. First time sleeping in this type of tents.

Thanks!

When researching our tent, I came across some comments questioning the pretty much untested longterm prospects for polycotton, given that there is potential for the polyester component to break down more quickly than the cotton. My comment was just questioning whether this potential issue would be compounded with the increased polyester content.

It only takes a week in the sun for the colour of the maui to fade. It happened to ours, it doesnt affect the waterproofing of the tent at all tho.

Sorry Im confused are you thinking of replacing your Maui with another one?

What is better about the newer version?

We have the Kauai Reef which has an integrated porch - this saves loads and loads of time compared to pitching a tent with a separate porch. For this reason Id be tempted by the newgate 5. Have you seen the newgate - what does the fabric feel like - does it feel similar to the Maui

Katieep:

No, I am looking for a tent ... and my choices are Maui Reef or Newgate 5.

I was also looking towards AIR tents like Vango but they are to expensive.

I do not have a chance to try or feel new fabic on Newgate 5 but for sure ratio of cotton and poly was changed. It should feel more like poly , reading specifications...

Newgate 5 have interesting entry but Maiu Reef is a little bigger in bedroom and leaving area. And have I think better material ratio - more breathable and better regulator to temperature ... but this is also my question. I also think that material change is due to cost saving. Not having better performance.

Take care

If you want integrated porch then this is the tent for you, not newgate 5:

Hi could be the changes were made for cost purposes but that the performance is not much different. Has anyone asked Outwell what the difference in performance is ??
