Morning,
We are due to make out first camping trip on Thursday for 5 nights and the weather is giving us rain every single day so far, gutted. I'm not sure some card games would entertain a 15/11 and 9yr olds. Anyone any tips or advice? Or should we just cut the holiday short? Not sure we can make it fun if it was rain every single day.

Yours are the same age as my kids and I pack wordsearches, drawing notebooks and pens/pencils always just in case, you'd be surprised the made up games they can create with just that

We only have one daughter, so its much easier.
We take travel board games, monopoly, cluedo and yahtzee.
Then again we have waterproofs and go out as well.

Cheers

We gave up on camping in the UK back in 1978! ever since then we have only ever gone camping in the South East of France during July.

In all those years we have had nothing less than stunning weather, in fact we are just back from a fortnight's campings at Frejus were the weather was terrific.

If I only go camping when the weather is good, then I may not go camping at all!

Be prepared with decent water-proof gear for adults as well as kids, so that one can still go outside for a walk or whatever when it rains.

Good luck!

What about taking up or learning some new hobby that the weather wouldnt affect? Geocaching seems to be an interesting pursuit. Gold panning (my own latest craze) is another. Potholeing is another possibility, fishing, canoing........We used to fish for hours when it rained. A big tarp, picnic, wet-weather clothes and you're sorted. I have a photo of our girls when they were young teenagers and pre-teeners all togged up in old wetsuits having a ball.

Then there are the inside games already mentioned, and learn some new games (are they too young for cribbage?).

Remember, although the forecast says rain every day it may not rain all day. Like another poster said, if we only camped in the good weather we'd never go away anywhere. Enjoy your holiday.

I wouldn't worry too much, the weather forecast is not that accurate, I have been in the past in my tent checking the forecast for the coming days, and the current weather online is completely different from what I am experiencing.

Also, a forecast of rain does not necessarily mean rain, all day, every day, it might just mean a shower or a bit of rain for part of the day. It is also a bit too far ahead to be really accurate.

I always find that the more waterproofs and umbrellas we pack, the more chance there is of dry weather

Nothing to stop you going out and enjoying yourself whatever the weather, its all in the mind, just go for it, be prepared for anything and you'll be fine.

I can remember vividly our lot in the South of France (not even guaranteed sunshine there, they had floods!) one year, in the pouring rain with their waterproofs on, riding bikes through huge puddles and having a marvellous time!

They also loved to make up their own games in the tent, some of which were rather random to say the least, one year I seem to remember all the kitchen utensils and items of food becoming different characters for a puppet show, with an avocado apparently being a wooden spoon's's wife (just don't ask!), as I remember, until my husband ate it, for which he was never forgiven!

Its all about what you make it.

Enjoy, you're away, and you're all together, that is what really counts.

Jane.

Weekend before last, massive storms forecast, Saturday heavy rain according to The BBC 4am to 1pm - had to abandon tent when I woke up as blazing sun burning my head. When it eventually arrived, Armageddon was a half hour light shower........go for it - there's no such thing as bad weather!!

Thanks guys. Just feeling a bit down in the dumps as it will be our first time away this year. We also have two dogs and my youngest suffers badly with eczema and asthma and cannot be I rain for too long before he starts suffering a lot with his skin. I will try my best to remain upbeat and may try the geocaching, if I can figure it all out!

Looking at where we're going this weekend the BBC shows heavy showers all day. Look at the met office and it shows heavy showers but only a 35-55% that it will rain.

That's still 4 days ahead

Are there any national trust properties nearby they do lots of stuff for kids, the bigger stately homes are normally great in the summer hols- competitions, trails, etc. we are members (living in the lake district you make the membership fee back quickly with the free parking!) and have been taking our (now 11) twin girls for years they always have a great time and normally learn something too!

Also we have been to the cinema before when camping and if you have electricity there is something really cosy about snugglying up with a DVD player.

Also oh is into board games - Carcasonne is really good and canbe simplified for kids, ticket to ride is also popular with the kids - we also have another one set on an island where you all work together to rescue treasures before it sinks - cant remember wots its called though!

We've had camping holidays in the uk where its rained loads and never had a trip in France where its not rained at least once and its never spoilt the holiday. I would just make sure you have somewhere in your porch to store wet coats and shoes - we bring a compact tripod based clothes hanger things to dry and air our clothes. Dont bring wet stuff into the tent or youll get bad condensation.

Bet it probably wont rain much anyway. I cant get over what a fab summer we've had so far. Hope you have a lovely time
