Hi.
My husband and I are currently trying to pitch our new glendale 5 in general garden before our first trip in it in a couple of weeks. We're stuck though! We're both experienced tent campers but we can't get the pins in both ends of any of the poles. We have loosened the straps on one side but the pin is still a long way away from the hole. Any tips? Thanks.

Are the straps adjustable on both sides, you only mention one? No experience of this tent but ring and pins can sometimes be very tight to get in. One excellent method suggested by Cross Camping which makes it easy is to have one of the joints in the pole leg undone and put the pin in first, then put the joint together. This video explains it very well:

Might be a silly question, but have you also got the right poles in the right place?

Hi. Thanks for the reply. There's only adjustable straps on one side. All the steel poles are the same so I'm sure they're in the right place. We've watched the video and tried that technique but it's still far too tight.
Feeling a bit desperate as we're booked to go away to two weeks!
Like I say the ring and pins are often tight, but it sounds like you might have a problem with the tent if the Cross method isn't working. Have you tried talking to the shop you bought it from, if it's a brick and mortar store they may have one on display you can compare.

Thanks again. I've emailed the shop. I've not actually seen the tent pitched anywhere as I don't think it's one of the most popular models. I've also sent outwell the pole lengths so they can confirm we've got the right ones. Trying to think of how to camp in two weeks time without a big tent!
Hello we have a Glendale 5 and although the pins are tight they are manageable. Follow the Cross Camping way of putting the tent up, importantly ensure the tent material is level on each side of the poles on the top of the tent. If the material is not evenly each side over the join the pins cannot be put in, it will be to tight. Another thing is ensure you put the pin in the side which is 'fixed', ensure the poles are not to far splayed out, move them in slightly and then on the strap loosening side swing the poles slightly forward and the pin should easily go in.
Sounds complicated but is not, hope, you get it sorted.

Thanks Daisiemoo. We did try the cross camping way but there was no way we could get the first pole together with the fabric central.
Are your tent poles accessible? If they are could I ask a huge favour -could you please measure one of the upright poles for me? We were so far away from being able to pitch the tent that we're wondering if the poles aren't right! Maybe we're just clutching at straws but it might be worth considering.
Just a wee update. I got a reply on the outwell Facebook page and it turns out we've got 2013 poles for a 2014 version. I've contacted the shop we got it from and hopefully it can be sorted out for our camping trip on the bank holiday weekend. Quite frustrating but at least we weren't just being daft!
Glad you got to the bottom of it! Bet you're breathing a huge sigh of relief, there's nothing worse than knowing you did everything right only for it not to work leading you to think you're going mad!

Hi glad you have found the problem, hopefully you will get them sorted by the weekend - just trying to picture the poor person who has the shorter poles trying to put up their tent if they have 2014 poles with a 2013 tent....

Same thing happened to me - I was sent the wrong poles for the tent. It was a little easier for me to work out the problem though, as I had four sets of poles for a tunnel tent that clealy only needed three.
One very good reason to always test pitch a new tent.
