I have been looking at tents for over a week now and have set my heart on an Outwell due to the possitive reviews.

I coudnt find exactly what i wanted withn my budget (arond £600), i realy like the florid modals but cant get them anymore, but I have managed to find some deals on new and older models but simply cant decide.

I wanted to have a 5 or 6 berth with a built in canopy for cooking with at least a 4000 HH, steel poles for stability and overall good space for 2 adults and 1 10 year old active boy.

Deals i have found -

Montana 6 Anniversary edition (2015), Carpet, Footprint and extension canopy £635

Oakland XL (2013) Tent only - £299 (will buy the etras seperate) expected total £520

Birdland 5 or Birland L (2014) Tent only - £299 (will buy the extras seperate) expected total £520

Nevada XLP (2014) Tent only - £400  (will buy extras seperate) expected total £640

Glendale 5 (2013) Tent only - £399 (will buy extras seperate) Total cost £575

Ive only camped 3 or 4 times in the last year and weve just given or old 3 berth suncamp tent away as it was too small so i have a little experience and all the equipment. Just need the right new tent to last the next 4 or 5 years.

Any help, ideas, alternatives, current deals are very welcome.

Thanks

Mick

We have a Montana for us two and our 10 year old daughter, the space is perfect, we bought an inflatable 5 berth for weekends away, but it turned out to be too small for the three of us so I would discount the 5 berths, I think the Nevada xlp has a combo of steel and fibreglass poles, so if your preferring stability I would rule that one out also, only leaves the Montana, simples!

Had I been going to buy another Outwell, and I was, I would have bought the Vermont LP.
I liked every aspect of it but in the end circumstances changed.

I also liked the Kensigton but the idea of fibre glass pole at the front filled me with dread. I felt it would break. Sooner or later.
Good luck. Outwell make good reliable tents, generally.

I have a Mocha Montana 6 that I have only used twice...Once on a seashore pitch with rather strong on/off shore winds to contend with...

Found the 5 steel poles with the wrap round ABS system for attaching guylines to the poles helped keep the tent very stable once I eventually got it pitched with help from others on both occasions...

My only advice on the Monty(or any other steel poled tent) Is make sure there is at least one other adult to lend a hand when pitching....Or you could find yourself in bother in all but the most calm of days....

I took and old Outwell Carolina 3 on my last trip a week or so ago (Just me) Two steel poles and two durawrap poles for both ends.....Pitched on a lovely sunny morning so no probs putting it up....Wind got up during the 1st night...Tent flapped about a bit...But had no trouble apart from two pegs lifting out on the side of the tent that was taking most of the wind....

Jelboy.

You'll get positive reviews on other brands too. Don't close your eyes to other brands because with Outwell you are paying for the name.

Look at the Vango Orava 600 XL to see what I mean. Or Kampa Croyde? Lots of others to choose from.

I had my heart set on a Monty 6p but then saw the Kampa Croyde 6. More useable space in the Croyd, built in canopy, loads of space and just as good a quality as the Outwell.

Thefamilytentshop.com are doing the Croyde 6 + footprint + carpet for £519, brilliant customer service from them as well!

Thanks for all the feedback. I had looked at many brands and must say i do like the look of the Croyde. I was just swayed on here as thre seems to be a strong lean towards Outwell on many of the threads.

I will go to Go Outdoors at the weekend to try and view some of the tents mentioned as i haven't seen them in the flesh yet.

The search continues!! Does everyone take this long to choose a tent? 17

The Monty 6 always looks a good tent.

I would disagree with the notion the Outwell is just a name that you pay for. Having read on the forums about finish I took a good close look at several brands of tent and the finish in the Outwells is of better nature. The sewing is very uniform and the taping on the seams is tidy and stuck down firmly. We looked at Kampa, Regatta, Sunncamp and Vango. Have a look for yourselves at the finishing.

As regards the customer service....I would not be too sure about Outwell as they really do not deal with the end user at all. If you do go with an Outwell I would recommend buying from a reputable place that your are confident of both after sales should something go wrong and a company that is interested in helping getting spares etc.

Good luck.

There is no doubt Outwell are very nice tents and very well made, I looked at both Outwell and Kampa and ended up with the Kampa which are also very well made tents and equal to Outwell for quality IMHO.

Yes Kampa sometimes have quality control issues but so do Outwell (and all manufacturers) Outwell have a poor reputation for customer care whereas Kampa are superb.

You need to see tents in the flesh, only then can you decide if Outwell is the manufacturer for you. Just beware though that Kampa control who stocks their tents so not every shop has them, we had to travel to Towsure in Halesowen to see one.

Make sure you see a good selection and choose the one that feels right.

We have had vango outwell and kampa tents and I really must say that the quality of kampa is no less than outwell ,we found our kampa excellent the only reason we now have an outwell is the size and space required and ease of pitching and I have to say that the quality seems to have gone down to our previous tents
I don't think go outdoors stock kampa so you will be restricted if you are relying on buying from there

Thanks for all the replies and help. After looking at what felt like every tent available and considering we rarely camp for more than 3 - 4 days we decided to go for something a little middle of the road compared to our original plans.

We went for the Kampa Croyde 4 + Vestibule + Carpet + Footprint £379

After seing this offer we decided to go for something a little smaller but it comes wih the built in canaopy that i wanted and its got a flat square front for better use of the space and the vestibule ads further size & privacy when wanted. Also it was significantly cheaper so we splashed out on some very comfy fishing bed chairs to replace our ever deflating airbeds :)

All i need to do now is find some videos on how to erect the tent as it doesnt appear to have come with any instructions??

Mick

Great Value.

I did like the flat front of these tents myself....as soon as I used our tent with the slanted front I realised I would prefer the flat front.

As you say better use of space in such designs.

Nice flexible outfit and the price will allow for more nights camping!

Ok so we have just used our new kampa tent for the first weekend (sitting in it now 😀) and I have to say compared to our old suncamp I'm not too impressed!!
First the door canopy pole snapped, heavy handed in my part! Then one of the groundsheet tabs snapped seemed very week and woke up this morning to several small leaks on the seams after a night of light rain.
Is it normal for 4 corner seams to leak in such light rain as my sun amp never did?
Any advice is welcome, should I return the tent or could it be Ive put it up too tight or does it need some sort of waterproof spray to be added?
Not very experienced when it comes to tent maintenance!!

Thanks
Mick
