I just want to share my experience about cleaning an Outwell Montana 6 that was covered in mould etc.
The tent had been packed away after a clear night on the shores of Loch Lomond and it appeared to be dry. When I pitched it this weekend in the garden to check it over before a planned road trip in a few weeks I noticed the bedroom pods were badly covered in mould and the section of roof above the bed pods and the side porch were also badly infected.
I took the following steps to clean the tent:
1. I soaked the bedroom pods in a strong Milton solution for 2 hours. I then rinsed them in water and hung them out to dry. Once dry I then cleaned all the material with Dettol Mould and Mildew remover until all signs of the mildew were removed. The pods were then thrown in the washing machine before air drying. The result was amazing. The pods were like new, smelled great and no signs of bleaching.
2. The roof sections of the tent were treated with Milton, left soaked for 15-20 minutes before rinsing and drying. I then used the Dettol Mould and Mildew remover again, taking care not to spill or drip on the main body or floor of the tent. I sprayed on to a cloth, wiped the roof and then rinsed. I repeated this until all signs of mould were gone.
3. I swept the floor and then mopped with a mild Milton solution before thoroughly rinsing and drying.
4. Although it may not have needed it I Fabsilled the entire tent. Two coats on the roof and one on the main walls of tent. For this the 2.5L tin was more the enough.
Once everything was dry I re-hung the bedroom pods and left to air for 6-7 hours until dry. My tent looks and smells like new and I cant wait for the road trip now.
Hope this helps anyone in a similar predicament. It was a fairly easy job and took an entire day but it was well worth it.
