Hi there,

We're looking for a shelter to use as a sort of communal kitchen/play area/living room to make camping and using the garden a little more bearable for us and the children during bad weather.

Question is, do campsites generally have a maximum size allowable?

I've seen a Coleman event shelter locally, but its size is somewhat daunting...

Some of the Quechua ones at Decathlon look fairly tempting too but am not familiar with their kit.

Any advice more than welcome :)

Cheers

we usually use a gazebo (3x3m) which is enough for our cooking bits and squeeze a fair few chairs in. size was not an issue but id recommend getting a waterproof one not the green canvas type if you decide to go down this route!

some sites charge a little extra for it.

the gazebos and the coleman shelter have sides that attach therefore might not be wind tight. i wanted one of these but couldn't justify the price. however it looks nice and should be a lot more stable under wind than a gazebo

We use a 2nd hand 4 berth tent brought off flea bay....just take the bedroom pods out and bin them...You then have an empty tent with a sown in ground sheet that serves as a 'community' meeting/eating/drinking area. Fully weather proof too.

Perhaps you could use similar?

We have the large Coleman event shelter and most of the time we get charged a few pounds per night and have always had plenty of space for it. We have just booked for August bank holiday and have had to book a separate pitch for it at that particular site, but as there's a group of us going it still works out quite cheap between us all :-)

I have a Khyam Screenhouse. It's 3m square, has proper zip down sides, and if you need to you can get a clip in groundsheet, and/ or a clip in bedroom. I use it like a gazebo in the garden, it has done service at several small festivals for the sound- desk, and it has been the communal cooking/ dining space on group camping trips, and I have been charged a few quid a night for having it as an extra on the pitch.
It goes up swiftly, thanks to the quick erect system.

Downside is that it is quite bulky, weighs in at 14+ kg, and it was not the cheapest day tent I looked at. It was the ease of erection that decided it for me, as my partner is disabled and often cannot assist, but I can manage this one all by myself.

Search these forums for " day tent" to read up on options.
