Hi,
we are not new to camping and currently have a 4 man suncamp tent, we are looking at getting a 6 man tent to fit our ever expanding family. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of which tent to buy as it seems to be a bit of a mind field. I have been looking at the Outwell Montana 6P Tent, which seems to be a decent tent? are there any other tents that people may recommend which may be better than this one?

thanks in advance

Colin

We originally looked at the Montana 6p before we decided on the Kampa Croyde 6. The main thing that swung us to the Kampa was the built in porch which we use for cooking under (haven't got wet yet despite some foul whether!) we also have the additional vestibule which encloses the front porch but we haven't had the need to use this yet.

Last weekend the Kampa stood up to some pretty bad weather in North Wales with strong winds and quite a bit of rain, it didn't budge and felt bombproof the whole time.

The Kampa is also quite a bit cheaper than the Outwell and is just as good quality.

So I'd say
Outwell Vermont xlp
Or on inflatable
Outdoor revolution 6.0xt

-------------
April Peak District Beech Croft Farm
May Peak District Duke of York
May Holland Delfse Hout
June Cotton Arms Nantwich
july/aug Cornwall Pentewan Sands
And quite a few local weekenders

My advice is spend as much as you afford on the tent. Witnessed countless situations where the cash was not spent on the main event and when the weather turns, the family suffer.

Never underestimate the UK weather, especially the wind.

You can always upgrade the other countless items as time goes on yet the tent needs to be dry and wind proof.

thank you all very much for the replies, the budget I was looking at was around £550ish, I want something that will last a few years and has plenty of inside space. Our current tent (suncamp tourist) has lasted us about 13 years but lacks inside space with 3 kids, we only had 1 child when we bought it but the family has increased since then.

cheers

colin

eBay, bear lakes or wolf lakes, plenty of bargains this year. Outstanding tents in this price range and will withstand most of the UK weather.

For £519 you can get the Kampa Croyde 6 with footprint and carpet from thefamilytentshop.com, brilliant family run camping shop with excellent customer service.

One additional word of advice is try and have a look at as many tents as possible, everyone on here is going to have a different opinion and favourite tent but often it's only when you actually see a tent in the flesh that you know it's the right one. As I said, we had our heart set on a Montana 6p but it was only when we saw the Croyde for real that we realised that (for us) it was the better tent.

I will second the Kampa Croyde 6, we recently had to replace our original one as the roof was starting to wear through UV damage and we replaced it with the same tent but newer model as, in all our years of camping, we haven't found one that ticks all our boxes like the Croyde does.

We still take the old one out too, normally for weekends if it looks like rain on pack up day, and despite being patched up with tape it has withstood storms and terrible winds and never leaked

The Montana is a lovely tent, the thing I don't like about it is the sloping front door whereas the Croyde has a flat front door which you can open right up or undo the curtains and have a lovely big clear window on rainy days, and the porch is a godsend!

I agree with Debs. The 6p does have a very annoying sloping front door ( we have one).

We use the side porch door mostly as it saves the tent from the rain. We remove our shoes here and place them (or chuck them from 3 smalls) into the shoes bag.

Only really have the front open on sunny days when going to be around for some time. If it is fully open and rolled up, I can only just on tip toes undo the loops to un roll it (I am a little on the short side). Mr F has no probs being over 6 ft.

Fits us fine and we are a family of 5. Would not fit 3 x beds into the 2 x 3 man bedroom pods. Our children are all under 10 and sleep on roll mats.

Just thought a list of the negatives may help you. It has masses of positives too. Just check out the tent reviews on this site.

Thanks very much for the info, So on my shortlist is
Outwell Montana 6P
Vango Orava 600 XL Tent
Kampa Croyde 6

I have seen the Vango and the outwell, and can see what people are saying about the slope on the front of the Outwell. I am erring towards the Kampa Croyde 600XL but I cannot find a stockist around Exeter, Devon that has one up for me to look at so I would have to buy it without seeing it erected. which is a bit of a risk

Colin

You could always ask on here if someone has one and is going to be camping somewhere near you so you can have a nosey

Not perfect I know, but there are some videos on Kampas YouTube channel of the Croyde 6.

Kampas website also has a retailer locator, you could contact one in your area and ask if they could get one in for you explaining that you want to check one out before buying.

Hi was also just wondering on the 2015 poled model does the front door open most of the width of the tent, or is it just the same width openeing as the side doors

Thanks

Colin

I've got a 2015 model Croyde 6 and the front door does open most of the width which is great in warm weather. However, you can don't have to open it that far you can just open it as a standard door door depending on the weather, evenings, etc.
