Hi Everyone

After months of looking at tents I have a a minimum criteria

head height in vestibule 1.2m minimum more prefered

weight as light as possible less than 5kg

pack size as small as possible as Im touring on a motorbike

the style ive been looking at are the Coleman caucasus 3.

but i prefer the vango 300 XL I just dont like the 7kg weight.

Any ideas on tents similar to those Ive already mentioned.

Hi

No I hadnt seen the quickhiker ultralight 4 it certainly meets my minimum criteria, I have a couple of reservations

1. the 5000mm groundsheet the ones that I have looked at are 10,000 which seem to be tougher (though heavier)

2. The Vango XL range has a skirted vestibule groundsheet which is sewn to the bedroom compartment meaning it can be rolled back to minimise mud etc being walked through or if its really wet.

3. The review said that the poles could be removed by cutting the tag that attaches them so thats not a real issue.

4. The 3000mm static head is a real concern although Quechua test it under 200 litres over 4 hours and not just under a column of water. remembering I live in Sunny???? England.

I really appreciate your recomendation and it is a real contender,I will have to go and have a look at it.

Anyone, anymore recomendations are appreciated. Thanks FOAM.

I have read a couple of reviews on this now and another concern of mine is that the inner tent compartment has a mess section at the front which means that the bedroom area cannot be sealed up completely if the weather is particularly cold.

also

Another review said that it was prone to condensation on the inside of the outer flysheet so when its packed up this then made the inner tent compartment wet. Is this normal?

Im new to tent technologies?

Hiya

I spent 3 years trying to find the perfect motorbike / tent combination then a couple of years ago stumbled on the Vango Gamma 200, it only weighs 4kg and packs down really small, It is slightly shorter than you wanted at 1m high in the porch but i also take the Vango adventure tarp and this creates a decent size area to sit and cook out of the rain. Theres plenty of room for bike kit in the porch and is quite a decent size 2 man tent in the sleeping area. It is only 3000mm HH but I spent 10 days in Scotland with some real heavy wind & rain on a couple of nights and never leaked or moved an inch. I got mine from Go but it looks as though they no longer stock them, may be able to find some from another retailer, I would definitely get the adventure tarp even if you go with another tent it really makes a huge difference and takes up very little room on the bike.

Bryan, I looked at all the Motorbike Garage tents and went to see the turini yesterday but the pack size is too big and it is really heavy as Im not worried about putting my bike in the vestibule and havent got a clue how to repair it the head height would however be useful to stand up and get dressed in but just not at the cost of weight and size pack. The redvers and mototent are are similar.

Wolves 3 I cant sit up without my head touching in a tent where the height is 3m hence my requirement of 1.2m minimum.

Vango Omega 250 or 350.Light weight due to alloy poles and got the height you want.Dont know about pack sizes.

Yes I was going to mention the Vango Omega range. We have the 350 (as car campers with a big self inflating mattress for comfort, we needed the extra space!)

The 250 has a 120cm height, weighs 4.25 kgs, 5000 HH fabric and alloy poles for strength and lightness. The groundsheet is a little thin on these but I bought the extra footprint to keep it clean and offer more protection. Pack size is 47 x 18 cm

And the Vango adenture tarp would be perfect with this kind of tunnel tent design, sheltering the entrance and giving you covered space to sit out and cook.

I went to see the Quechua quick hiker ultralight 4 in Decathlon who were incredibly helpful and pitched it for me - and it just wasnt the right tent for me. Incredibly light though for the size and it looked well made.

I have also been to look at the Vango Pulsar 300 in Cotswold Outdoor Bicester who were really helpful and pitched it for me and when Im sat on the robens alloy stool my head touches the flysheet unless Im at the very highest point but Im tempted to sacrifice that but Ive also been looking at the coleman caucasus as it has 10cm more headroom and is the same weight excluding the vestibule groundsheet but I cant find somewhere that has it to go and have a look at it.

The Vango Omega range pitch in one and the inner tent isnt removable so if its packed away wet you cant keep the inner seperate from the outer to stop it getting wet - so its not suitable for me.


Aghhhh its looking like I might have to compromise on vestibule height - I only want 120mm

Thanks to all of you who contributed. I bought the Vango Pulsar online for a great price of £120 inc delivery. The quality of it out weighed all the niggles I had which was really only the head height. Thanks again.

Just for info the inner on the Omega 350 does detach. Not a bad tent but the side doors on them are a PITA when it's raining heavy. I had ours modified so the end of the porch also opens as an optional entrance & sit under canopy with 2 hiking poles to support.
