Hi, prior to us pitching our first ever tent this morning, I have a quick question which might sound really stupid but here goes:

Do we peg out the footprint and then peg the tent out on top of it or do we use one peg through the tent and footprint at the same time?

Hey,
Peg the footprint first then the tent over. The footprint should be an inch or so smaller all round than the area of the tent so water doesn't collect underneath.

When we used to camp years ago we never had a footprint (were they not around then?) and love that we do now, keeps the tent much cleaner, esp if very heavy and large, stops folding mucky stuff onto the fabric.

Make sure the footprint groundsheet is not sticking out at all from under the tent: mischiefsmum is right about the possibility that rain will run in between the two ground sheets if it is not properly covered over by the tent.

Position the footprint on the pitch where you want the tent to be and peg it with mushroom pegs which will not damage the underside of the tent.

As mentioned, make sure none of the footprint sticks out or water will drip onto it when it rains, run back under the tent, and pool underneath the tent groundsheet.

Alternatively, and providing it's not windy, there is no need to peg the footprint at all. Once the tent is on top it won't go anywhere. In fact if it is not pegged and you find it sticking out on one side you can reach underneath on the opposite side and move it slightly.
