I like the style of the Vango Icarus 500 but have read nothing but bad things around the quality and durability of this tent. I'll list the things I want in a tent
Big enough for a family of 4 (wife and I, 5 and 3 year olds). 5 berth? 2 compartments that can be unzipped into one large one is ideal.
Needs to be tall enough for a 6ft adult to stand up straight in
Living area/entrance big enough for a small table and couple of chairs for possible rainy days.
Carpet option available. Like the idea of these.
Good amounts of ventelation and a few windows for light.
Robust! with two small kids I cant be doing with a tent failure.
I havent added a price range - I want to see some options and then i'll keep an eye out for them.
I'm also looking for one that can be compatible or come with party shelter type of covering. See pic http://www.worldofcamping.co.uk/expert-advice/tents/event-shelters
will only be used for summer camping trips in the UK and possibly south of France. That could be all kinds of weather though...
Thanks in advance! I'll keep an eye on here to book in some trips with the family.

I would look for a 6berth to give you all the room you will need, with kids you will need room for all their stuff, once you have the beds down there isn't any room for anything else in the bedrooms.
If you get camp beds you can store bags etc under them.
Look at the Kampa Croyde range, loads of room and not too expensive and good reviews to.
I agree with Duff's, you need a 6 berth to be comfortable and yes the Kampa tents are excellent.

Hi
Before you buy a tent PLEASE check what fabric it is made from. Have recently bought a tent and after the first night woke up with bedding soaking wet. Thought it had rained and tent leaking?? But no - it was condensation. Am informed by Vango that condensation is something that is expected in any tent made in the newer fabric polyester. We have camped for over 30 years and were horrified by this. On further investigation it seems that tents (cheaper ones) made in polyester are only expected to give about 14 weeks use before being useless.
Does anyone have any experience of this?

Yes it is only cotton that is fully breathable. Modern man made fabrics are made waterproof by adding a PU coating, but the fabric then does not breathe. An adult breathes out up to a litre of water vapour overnight, and this is why ventilation in modern tents is crucial. You can also cut down on water vapour by not boiling the kettle inside, and keeping vents open. On any trip I take every chance to air bedding out in the sun in order to eliminate any damp that has built up.
To respond to the original post, a 6 berth is what you need and there are a few models that have a built in canopy on the front so you would not need a separate shelter, such as the Vango Anteus 600.
