Having never done anything remotely close to camping for 20 years, I'm taking the plunge and meeting up with a large group of friends in August, where I will have to have a tent.

Most of the people are veterans with large complex looking tents that are well outside my price range.

But I'm determined to go, It'll be just me and my 5 yr old, so the tent needn't be massive.

Having scoured Amazon (and this forum) for a few weeks my dilema is whether to get a budget £50/£60 tent or to stretch my finances and get something more long-term.

I've been looking at:-

Yellowstone Ascent
Vango Soul 300
North Gear Camping Mars
Outgear Explorer
Vango Talas

But I'm also drawn to the more advanced Vango tents such as

Vango Banshee 300
Vango Tempest 300

etc.

I'll be taking the car so weight is not a problem.

Can someone offer some pointers?
My main concern is being wind and waterproof!

If you are looking at compact tent and quite happy to share your sleeping area with your 5 year old all of the above are fine.

This I believe would be better in some respects better height and room despite the 2 berths it is bigger than most 3 berth models, sturdy and fantastic value. Available in green or blue.

Vango Aura 200

If you want more room 4/5 berth that is another thread.

Try this one from Olpro, although billed as a 2 berth, it's actually the same internal space as a Vango Halo 300 which is a 3 berth.

I have the Aura 200 as in the link not to be confused with the new model which is not as good imo.
Its a great tent, full sewn in groundsheet, seperate sleeping pod and living area.
I use it for solo camping but great for a couple.

I bought mine from Somerset camping as in the link, bargain for the price.
