Hello all! new to camping and looking to get our first tent. currently i am looking at the Vango Icarus Classic 500 and the Vango Lomond 500. Both seem to have really good offers on.
i have looked on lots of different sites and am unable to find out much information/reviews on the Vango Lomond. Is there anyone who has had any experience with this tent and how would it compare to the Icarus Classic?

any help would be greatly appreciated!
A

I haven't got either of these tents but, on looking at the spec, I'd choose the Icarus (with optional front canopy) over the Lomond. Why? The integrated canopy of the Lomond will catch the wind and can't be removed, so that could be a pain. Also, you'll have to put that fourth pole in each and every time you use it. If you opt for the Icarus and get the optional front canopy, you have a choice about whether or not to use it, so you'll be more inclined to use the tent for shorter-stays and won't need to worry so much about impact of wind (also the sloping front of the Icarus won't take such a battering).

It's not for no reason that the Icarus is such a popular little tent on these boards.

Perfect thank you for your reply! I was definitely leaning towards the Icarus as it has a lot of positive reviews.

The Icarus is a good tent, if you intend getting the font canopy. Otherwise that sloping front door can be a bit of a pain when it rains and you want to use it to get in and out. But the one thing I dislike most, and its only a personal thing, is fibreglass poles. Give me metal poles anyday. This would be my choice. Vango Calisto. No sloping door and steel poled. link

Icarus, loads of room with the canopy. Easy pitch. Ours was well used and stood up in all types of weather.

During a particularly windy trip last year I noticed that the tents with broken fibreglass poles all had one thing in common - inadequate guying. Guys had either been ignored or pegs had pulled out. I had put my Icarus in the lee of a tall hedge, guyed it down thoroughly using rock pegs and it stood fast without damage through the gale.

There is an excellent sticky on this site "coping with the wind" full of useful tips.

Icarus has sewn in groundsheet and is great tent, we have 300, daughter the 500. Now for some reason Vango are making tents without sewn in groundsheet now, so not sure about Lomond. SIG every time for us.
