I've been researching this (regarding bell tents) and I must say, I'm thoroughly uncertain.

Some people, including professional stove makers and installers, say that it is a bad idea to have a 90-degree bend in a flue, particularly if it is not immediately behind the stove. Presumably the hot gases rising up the flue are the primary source of the draught, and the longer the horizontal section, the more mass of "dead weight" the draught has to pull through.

PukkaTents say their stove maker said it would be ok as long as the horizontal section isn't more than 50cm long, and a vertical flue is undesirable as it would drip tar onto the flysheet. I am imagining that the tar condenses on a witch's hat top and drips off, but with a cylindrical spark arrestor this would not occur as there is no overhang. Just imagining...

Other advice is that the stove itself should not be less than 45cm from the tent wall.

PukkaTents and PodPads, at least, supply tents only with holes for horizontal flues. Others (Karma, Boutique, SoulPad) will put it where you want, without suggesting there is any disadvantage to either arrangement. SoulPad's Blaze/Genie system appears to be vertical, however, and they're not suggesting there's a problem either with dripping tar or horizontal draught.

Can anyone give me a definitive statement on this matter?
