We are keen to buy a large good quality tent on a budget and someone at work is selling an Outwell Montana 6 and extension canopy for £250. The tent is 9 years old and the canopy 3. My husband thinks it is too old but I wondered with a good quality tent that the seller has looked after, if it will still be fine. I have the chance to view. Would waterproofing it be enough to get a good few more years out of it? Any thoughts appreciated

It will depend upon usage and exposure to UV light.

If used continuously over the 9 years then the material will have deteriorated,. Hidden away for the whole period, no problems.

I personally would look for cotton/canvas if searching for an older tent.

We had an Outwell Montana 4 a smaller version of the Monty 6. It lasted us 10 years. Overtime the fabric waterproofing degrades with sunlight(UV)& being coated PU polyester it was not really suited to reproofing. I agree with SGThomas comments in the previous post.

agree with above, search "Outwell Lakes" on eBay. You will get a Bear Lake or Wolf Lake for not a lot more than that. They are polycotton and although many will be a good few years old, they will have years of life in them. I bought a 2009 Trout Lake 4 last year and it was as good as new

I have never managed to wear out a tent yet but I think 9 years is pushing it a bit. I would try to find one no more than a couple of years old and preferably one which the seller states has only been used once or twice. Even then it needs to be examined before buying because it could be riddled with mildew and that is death for the newest of tents.

All my tents, bar a brand new Solace bell tent, are all over 40 years old and going well.
But then they are cotton/canvas...............

I might buy a 9 year old tent for £30, but not for £250.
For £279 I could get a new Vango Padstow 500 Tent Package – 2017, complete with Porch, Footprint Groundsheet & Tent Carpet. So why buy old and used ?

As mentioned, Cotton Canvas for an older used tent, we got our Cotton tent new in 2008, although it was manufactured during 2007. So it's ten years old now.

It has been used most years since purchase, although only for a fortnight or so per time, plenty of exposure to the sun though, as we only ever go camping to the South East off France during July.

And I can happily report that the canvas is still almost as new, and has that smell that you only get from Cotton canvas.

I would say it will be good for at least another 20 odd years.

I did wince at spending £699 on the tent at the time, but it does seem to have been money well spent.
