Hi Everyone,

We just got a new tent. (Our last tent lasted nearly 20 years!) It's an Outwell and it came with halfround pegs for the corners - but the pegs don't folder over at the top so if someone steps on it without shoes on it's going to cause a serious injury. To avoid this we could drive it all the way into the ground, but then I'll be burying my (sewn-in) groundsheet loops since the hook on the peg is about an inch down.

I have two younger kids and really don't want this unnecessary hazard. Can anyone recommend a different corner peg? I've read a lot about delta anchors, but they only seem to be for guy ropes? (I also can't figure out how you'd pull them out as they don't seem to have a hole?) But I digress - any replacement options, or ways to make the current ones safe, would be greatly appreciated!

I'd also suggest some metal V pegs for the 4 corners.

Delta anchors are indeed for guy lines only. I lift mine out with a claw hammer (I use the claw hammer to lift out all my metal V pegs too).

Have you looked at the stainless steel delta's

They have a small carabina (cant spell) that would take a pegging loop. The stainless deltas have a hole for a peg puller

Thanks Sean and Jim. That's practically what we have, but ours don't have that lovely bent top. I'd feel much better with that!

Deltas are great, but not for corner pegs: they "creep" towards the tent as you put them in, so only really work on adjustable guylines. Put some 8mm T-bar rock pegs in the same order - beautifully made and sit flush to the ground.

Whichever pegs you use they need to be hammered right into or level with the ground. It doesn't matter too much about 'burying' the groundsheet rubbers because they aren't adjustable so once pegged down that's where they will stay.

Any peg stuck up from the ground is a potential hazard and the guy or pegging rubber could slip off if it gets windy.

Some pegs, especially the ordinary wire ones which are perfectly adequate for the job, can spin round and eject the rubbers or guy ropes if they are not hammered right down so the hook is also in the ground preventing the peg from turning.

I use rock pegs for all the stress points such as the corners of the tent, the base of the poles, and the main stress bearing guy ropes, and ordinary wire pegs for the non-stress bearing guys and rubbers along the sides of the tent.

As I always say though, all pegs do the job they are intended for, it just depends which ones you feel more comfortable with, and after years of bent wire pegs and plastic pegs, rock pegs now rock my boat.
