I have a High Gear Voyager 6 tent, it has been used 4 times over the past 3 years and on its 5th outing this past weekend leaked a LOT and seemingly through the fly sheet and not the seams. It was stormy weather and very hard rain, the tent has a 3000mm Hydrostatic head rating. I read conflicting views on wether it can be reproofed or needs binning. Go outdoors tell me it needs re proofing with a product like Fabsil, however I read on here a few posts that say once a Polyester tent begins to leak it is done for.
What is the truth? And has anybody salvaged a tent like this?

The proofing starts to reduce from day one, the more sun the tent gets the faster the proofing reduces. Yes treating the tent with a proofer will help. If the fabric is like a crisp packet then yes it's worn out. ... Try watching this video as it might just be condensation

Was it like a 'mist' type leaking? Rather than big fat drops? We had that on our brand new outwell nevada, and it was simply because the fly was saturated from the bad weather. Where the rain hit the flysheet the water sort of sprayed/misted through the fabric - its never happened again.

Thinking more along the lines of Cross Camping myself in that it could just be condensation.

It's funny stuff.

Sounds like condensation for you also.

I've never found any set pattern for it occurring but it's mainly about the cool moisture (rain or air) outside the tent being cooler than the air in the tent that your warm breath is outputting. Warm air rises and hits the cool surface of the warm tent roof and hey presto condensation.

Glass windows suffer condensation but no water passes through the glass, rather it is formed. In a tent gravity plays it's part in letting droplets fall.

Shouldn't need reproving as it has hardly been used.   Use to camp about 4 time a year, never had the reason to reprove it.   It will be condensation, just need to ventulate your tent.

Poly tents should have around 20 weeks of use in them before UV causes the bond with the PU waterproof layer on the inside. As Gary said, if it feels kind of brittle like a crisp packet then that is what has happened. If this has happened after only 4-8 weeks then that's not good, because no amount to treatment on the exterior with fabsil will remedy that.

So it could in fact be condensation, which can be extensive in heavy rain and it will drip all over.

Hello, we've got this tent and it's on its fourth season, used for about 8 trips in total and mostly for a week at a time. Last year we noticed that the fabric was absorbing lots of water rather than letting it run off, so at the start of our trip a couple of weeks ago we reproofed it with nikwax. When the inevitable thunderstorms came, the water just beaded and ran off like when it was new.
Personally, I'd give reproofing a try, it's way cheaper than a new tent and if it doesn't work then you've only lost a few quid. Hoping we'll get another couple of seasons out of ours before the UV kills it . . . 😀
