Hi guys, first time campers pitching up tomorrow and we've just thought of an important issue.
How do you secure your tent when leaving campsite.
Might be a daft question but would be interested in anyone's advice.

Hi Sean, We have never had a problem with security when camping. The only advise i would say like anywhere don't leave anything of great value in the tent and deffinitely not in view when you are going out for the day. Don't worry too much and have a great holiday.

My advice would be to keep valuables with you, or in your car, rather than leave them in the tent when you go out (I don't mean camping kit, but phones / tablets / cameras / keys etc).

There is no point putting a little lock on your zip, as a thief would just slash the tent instead. Also, you don't want a lock on a zip at night as in the case of fire you need to be able to make a quick exit.

Campers are generally an honest bunch who keep an eye on each others things and who's who - there's a mutual vulnerability that leads to a sort of unwritten code - but I would follow the above advice to avoid the risk, or just don't take that sort of thing with you.

I agree. Just leave your stufff tucked into your porch / in the tent and zip it up.
Rain and stuff blowing away is more of a risk than someone making off with your camping chairs.

If you have bikes lock them together or to a fence.

Thefts on campsites are still very rare but good advice above. Don't take the crown jewels or the family silver with you when you go camping and keep wallets/purses etc; in your possession at all times. I personally don't take laptops and other gadgetry with me when camping but many people do so lock them in the boot of the car when you are away from the tent.

There is not a lot you can do to secure other personal possessions like camping gear/clothing/electrical appliances but I generally put everything in the tent when I go out and zip up the doors and curtains...what can't be seen isn't a temptation.

I wouldn't hold too much store in fellow campers keeping an eye on your gear. It is very rare that I would have a clue who lived in the next tent or caravan. I might see people coming and going but wouldn't know if they were supposed to be there or not. Obviously if they drew up in a transit van and started chucking everything in the back it might attract my attention

Campsites are generally pretty safe places though and the owners and wardens usually keep a tight rein on the comings and goings...after all, they charge for visitors!

Concur with the advice above, either take them with you, or put them away in a lockable place, such as the car or the trailer etc...

Push bikes should be chained up - I bought a folder so that I can keep it locked up in the car.
