Hi all,
We live in south west Norway and are looking for our first family tent (2 adults and 2 kids, currently 3 years and 6 months). We like the outwell tents with airbeams as we assume they are easier to pitch than traditional poles (our 3 year old likes to run and hide so we need something that one person can pitch if needed) but can't decide whether it is worth the extra money to get polycotton or to get a bigger and likely cheaper polyester tent? Unfortunately there is nowhere locally to actually look and get advice :(
We are looking at maybe the Flagstaff 6atc for polycotton or maybe the montana 6sa or even the vermont 7sa in polyester. Our instincts say polycotton is probably best as cold and wet are always an option here but it would be good to have some advice from someone who has tried both (if not in Norway I imagine north of Scotland would be similar).
If not outwell then we can also get the Robens polycotton tents here the prospector and kiowa are both within budget and would allow a stove to extend the season but we are not sure is the kiowa shape might be impractical and the prospector looks difficult to pitch and definitely needs 2.
We would like to use the tent for weekends away for as much of the year as practical and probably 1 or 2 longer (1,2 or 3 week) trips in either Norway or Denmark or maybe further afield once the kids are a bit more patient with long car journeys ;)
Any advice? should we prioritise space or fabric? ease of pitching? are there any other tents we should consider? Any hints or tips to stop a wayward preschooler disappearing? ;)
Many thanks,
Becca

Based on my own experience in Sweden I would say that an Outwell polyester tent will do perfectly fine in your climate. We have camped with a Nevada MP for the last two years and with some good sleeping bags cold weather will not be a problem.
Outwell has a good ventilation, as long as these are used there's no problem with condensation.
Polyester will get ridiculous hot if sun is shining directly on the tent, if so it's possible to open all three doors (at least on the Montana) to ventilate. A roof protector or Dual protector will make a big difference for the climate inside tent.
We do regret buying the Nevada MP based on its size only. It's to small for a family of four in a rainy day - knowing this I would have bought the Montana. We added the front extension to our Nevada and thereby got about the same space as a Montana. With this on space is adequate. But - with the extension attached the wind rating is no more as the first section of the extension uses the tents front pole adding twice the pressure to it in winds.
Look at Vango Illusion TC 800 xl. You can buy it online from GB.
Thank you, that is really useful advice. We had considered getting something smaller we could extend but it can get very windy here (not that we would camp right on our doorstep but with 2 small children we would probably stay within an hour or 2 for weekend trips at least) so it is probably wise to have the tent we need as one whole tent. We'll look into the roof protector and the vango, we were a bit wary of buying from the UK in case of needing to return something faulty but it is worth considering as well as it opens up our options a lot I think.
Thank you again,
Becca
