Hi all,
I have bought the Argos Pro action 4 man dome tent for quick weekends away. I have just realised it is only 1200 HH. If it pours down could I throw a rubberised paddling pool cover over the tent or would this just make things worse? A novel idea I know but the pool cover is all I have available.
Thank you.

a fishing brolly would work too and be better waterproofing

to be honest why not just return the tent? and then buy something more suitable for the uk weather

Get a Tarp to put over it, could help if it's heavy rain

It's Argos, I'm sure you'd have no problem taking it back for a refund?

Then, perhaps consider buying a tent, suitable for UK camping, from a reputable camping equipment specialist? A good one should be able to advise you further, before investing in such a purchase, subject to your needs, desires, and expectations.

Camping is what you make it... absolutely exhilarating, totally relaxing, downright miserable, a complete disaster, etc, etc...

Wacky, I know, but just a thought!

If you’ve not used it yet, take it back to Argos.

My new tent is 3000 HH, single-skin, have pitched it in the garden for a week with a tarp stretched over it, seamsealead and fabsiled it to within an inch of its life and am still looking forward to its maiden voyage with ...shall we say...’nervous anticipation!’

Good luck.

The fact that it is only 1200mm does not necessarily mean that it will leak.

Tents usually leak through the seams and zips, not through the actual material.

Agree with Bernie - your tent is far more likely to fail in other ways rather than through the fabric itself.

It'll be made with cheap poles - which can snap in wind, the stitching will be cheap like the fabric, meaning it's important no to overtighten the guy ropes as you'll get little seam holes.

Have looked it up - it's a single skin so I wouldnt put a rubberised cover over it as the condensation will drip on your head and/or your bags will get damp.

I wouldnt say it's worth fabsiling a new tent - the waterproofing is on the inside all the fabsil does is make nice shiny rain water beads but can affect breathability - we had our tent 5 years before proofing it.

One positive thing you can do is buy a cheap tarp 2 x 3 metre as your groundsheet might be prone to leakage upwards, make sure you fold it into the underside of the tent so that any exterior run down isnt routed inwards.

A cheap tent failing early on can really put you off camping for life.......

BUT that's not to say you've wasted your money!!

So far as I can tell your tent was £25, which is a bargain if you can get a couple of weekends out of it - I hope your first weekend or two away go well enough that you'll be motivated to buy a better tent and open up a whole new world of great trips! (and cost.....)

Looking on cotswold or go outdoors I'd say £125 buys a decent 4 man tent as maybe your next step......and at £200 in the sale you get a good good one. Keep your argos one for now I would!

got to agree with camping is what you make it. You don't want your first time out to be a flop as this will put you off. If weather going to be ok when you may get away with it. My answer would be to look on ebay etc for a tent someone is selling. Have a nosey as a lot of people buy a good tent then don't like camping and just sell it off cheap. I got my Force 10 nitro 200 plus for £45 on pre loved. it must of been pitched once. Why not pitch the Argos one and get the hose on it to test the seam seals.

HAPPY CAMPING

Start with brutal honesty, but finish with almost poetic positivity.

From a bag of nails, to an absolute bargain for a couple of tester weekends away! That's a great way to look at it.

What an excellent post.

Beautifully put, that man!

Agree with abaove, we started with a 4 man Gelert £80, which did us for 3 hols, then we moved onto our Biscya, then our Croyde airbeam.

Best to test the waters
