So we borrowed a tent this weekend to take our kids on their first camping experience and we all loved it. We would like to buy a good tent for a family of 4 with blackout bedrooms, good head height and not too big that we need to worry about paying for two pitches. We also don’t want to get washed away or freeze so looking to buy a decent make that will last and not let us down. Happy to buy second hand if anyone can recommend what to look out for. I’ve read Outwell are good but there are so many to choose from. It’s all a bit overwhelming and everyone seems to be talking about air tents now too. Is that the way to go? Any help appreciated. TIA

Hello and welcome. For a family of 4 you need at least a 6 berth in order to have enough room for kit. Tunnel shapes are the most common these days and are rarely so huge that you need 2 pitches.
Air tents are great and very convenient, but are expensive and bulky. You are right that Outwell is a respected make but so are Vango and Kampa. Your budget may dictate whether an air tent would suit, or whether s traditional poled tent will be the one for you.
If you give us an idea of your budget then more accurate advice can be given. Second hand will give you more bang for your buck and at this stage in the year a lot of second hand bargains are appearing on Ebay etc so its good timing. You also need to think about packsize and the space in your vehicle too.
Thanks for your help. If we were buying second hand then £3-400 for something that was once nearer double this. We probably won’t be going camping for more than a weekend at a time and only in the UK. Our kids are still quite young so won’t be much help in putting up the tent so it needs to go up fairly easily with Dad doing it pretty single handedly and be worth the effort for just a couple of nights. We have quite a large boot (Citroen Xara Picasso) but no top box. Thanks again.
Conventional wisdom correctly days you need at least a 6 birth but if you are going for only weekends something like a 5 berth vango might be better as the put up and down time is quick. The boot on a Picasso soon shrinks one you put camping kit in :-)
